Hopefully your homebrew filter will solve this, but the best solution for you would be to extend the vent and route it as far forward and as high as possible (engine bay would be ideal). Not a great design by GM to put the vent near the gas fill tube which is at the very rear of the vehicle and most likely to catch all the dust/dirt/etc. being kicked up by the tires going down the road.
