It stands for Meduim Density Fiber wood. One tip i could tell you is pick the subs that you are going to use and check the manufactures recommeditions for the type of box and the volume and also the port size.

I think 3/4 should be enough the reason is if you use a 1 inch its going to be heavy and unless you going with powerfull speakers and amps its not worth the weight that's my opinion.

yeah 3/4 is very common. it will do the job fine for most builds. I money isnt an issue Id go with Birch. 3/4 inch. It is sold in 4x8 sheets also. It is lighter, stronger, and doesnt split like mdf when you put a screw in its side.

You need to pick a sub, amp and box design that will all work together. thats the secret to great sounding subs. If you buy a sub that wont work well in your box it will never sound good no mater what you power it with. Go look at them and look at thier requirments. First you need to figure out where the box is going to go and how big it is going to be. Then you look at speakers and amp to find out how much power you can afford and what speakers you can afford for your box design. You can make a cheap ass sub sound good in a properly designed box and amp combo.
