Howdy guys, Haven't been on here in forever and need to say this before my Tech2 question: I'm sorry for not finishing my rear end swap thread and linking the pics yet. I've broken two phone screens since it was completed and I had stopped (voluntarily) backing up my every move to the clouds a couple years ago so the pics are only in the phone(s) w/broken screens. There are new screens here though just need make it happen.....not that I thought anyone was sitting on edge of their couch in suspense or anything.....just been on my mind, needed to apologize.....that's all
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About 3hrs ago a Tech2 showed up for sale about 10min away from me. I asked a couple pertinent questions about it, one being is it genuine or Hongkong version? and dude sent me this back: "
I'm not the original owner
I actually have 2 of them
And 1 tech 1
It came from a local gm dealer
They got rid of the older stuff when the gm midi came out
So I believe it is GM
I use it sometimes on my 2004 trailblazer "

Is that a plausible scenario?? Did GM get rid of Tech2's when MIDI came out?

That's a copy and paste. He did say he was driving though so maybe i'm over-reading the line that answers my question.....

He's only got the handheld, the CANdi, and the ODBII adapter. One has 33.004, the other 33.002 software card but I don't know anything about VCI yet..

any thoughts before I call him in a few minutes?

edit: (please correct me if I'm not comprehending this correctly) A functional version of 33.004 in a working Tech2 should be able to do any and every thing a Tech2 can do to a 2011 gmt900, whether it's a clone or a genuine, correct? As long as it's not stolen and locked in some way?

No wis2000 or pass thru needed? just working Tech2 and 33.004 and it should do it all?

I'd like to add to his question, what are the giveaways that at Tech2 is a clone?

From what I've gathered over last couple years on web.... functionally nothing different, but physically the genuine has:

manufactured date stamped inside card slot lid

silver metal inside female candi connectors vs bronzish on clone

sturdier, easier connecting connectors

gray(er) area around the keypad buttons vs black(er) on clone

less complaints of issues with connection

BUT that is w/o hands on verification

2nd on purchasing if the price is right. A lot of the cost of the clones has shipping cost tied into the price.

Sounds like the guy is unloading his hoard and ready to cash in. Cash (in hand) being the ultimate bargaining tool.

Was in a hometown hardware store in Steubenville, OH yesterday and they had a sign that said cash is king above the register :D

I'm still reeling a little from the $175 I sent to some doucher in Indiana for an Escalade gauge cluster in Dec '22.... Has me a little hesitant to buy one that has no paperwork, support, etc... I'll test it out as thoroughly as possible, but it will be my first time w/hands on one. Mainly just trying to avoid getting into something that has a bunch of hidden $$$$ to be able to use to it's full capability

33.004 was the latest and final software version

Thank you, I read that in more than one place. Would've been just fine if I had stuck to this forum and kept digging for info. For whatev reason I typed it into a www search and proceeded to read post after post contradicting each other and claiming you had to buy a subscription etc....smh

Nothing that I have found... Only differences I have seen are individual unit based and have to do with quality of connectors and a couple complaints about logo being off center or pixelized during boot-up. Also read one that genuine CANdi wasn't working and one where the LED light on a genuine CANdi had stopped working...

That’s the key feature I couldn’t remember from that post. The fewer wires, the better.

Yes, keying off the motor for any reason and having to go through the menu to reboot the tech2 again is a PITA. If you were in a screen you don’t remember how to get back to its a huge waste of time.

Wondered where you went. Glad all is well apart from your phones! Nice to have you back.

Yeah....Busy stretch of life last year

Thank you, glad to be back....I figured you guys would be able to hold down the fort without me for a few months lol.

Felt a little guilty too though....felt like I've taken a little more from the pot than I've put in to this point? As karma does, when I finally logged in a couple days ago, I had a DM question from a Newbie that was 8mo old...:Nonono: He was doin the 14bolt swap and needed three answers that I could've rattled off w/o hesitation

There's been more than a couple long drives over the last few months that I've thought about all of the help I received on here. I'm extremely grateful for it! This is hard maybe to put to words, but there is NOT MUCH ON EARTH more empowering than being able to fix things or make things better, more efficient, more practical, easier to use, more durable and on and on....and as this journey progresses from reading a dipstick to reading a dial caliper so does the knowledge base, aptitude, problem solving, and confidence....and it carries over to other parts of life. On an individual basis, one could make a strong case for applying the word 'priceless'

Ironically I was researching transmission oil temps and coolers and the bypass/flip and basically just continuing my education and preparation to rebuild my 6L80 myself....and from a www search one of the top results was a thread on here from earlier this month where you said something like --you towed over the spine of Appalachian Mountains through WV (if I'm remembering correctly) right before and right after the 4th?-- I nudged Amanda and said "look honey Dave drove right by us last week and didn't even honk" she had no clue what I was talking about lol... We were only a few miles from the Sandstone Exit the week before the 4th at a friends cabin w/4 of my buddies, wives, and kids... Glad you're well also my man! Talk to you soon

I don't think anyone's keeping score around here. :) I know I just come here because I love helping others, I learn new things every day that have nothing to do with politics, and it's a great bunch of people I enjoy being in community with. And your questions and participation here have led to others tackling challenges that they otherwise wouldn't have, because your posts live in perpetuity. So don't beat yourself up.

Yes! Well said. It's the pleasure of finding things out that leads to the joy of getting things done, that leads to a better quality of life for us and the people we love.

Wow! This is what I mean about our posts living in perpetuity and we have no idea who we may have helped or what ripples we send into the universe. We went up to Star Lake southwest west of Pittsburgh for a Tyler Childers show, pulling the camper. It was that trip that convinced me I needed a beefier rig if I was going to tow a 7500 lb camper with 2-4 kids (our 2 plus their friends), and an 85 lb dog. On that trip and on a few others, I was over the payload limit and that's when the rear suspension compressor failed.

The power supply inside the unit is inferior. @Doubeleive explained it in another thread. When using a clone and you have to start the engine it will reboot unless you have an external power source plugged into it. An authentic Tech2 will not.

Thank you... My main goal was to learn if it could somehow be locked or need to be updated and cost additional $$$... I was probably a little quick to ask vs digging deeper in archives and reading for myself but these things vanish so fast when they're for sale....and it's so close to me(and that rarely happens)
