Oh yeah, me too!

More and more I am just leaning on doing this in my driveway. Looks like you just remove exhaust, unbolt transmission, remove wiring/hosing to engine, remove motor mount bolts, remove radiator and support? Then yank it out?

Just curious if there are any gotchas and if it can be done in a reasonable time (say 2 days).

I half-assed documented the removal of my 5.3 in my build thread. I've always had the heads off removing and installing, so I've never had the pleasure of using 36"+ of extensions and wobble joints/sockets to access the top four bellhousing bolts. But, for everything else, it can be pulled out in a day working by yourself with just an engine crane.

*EDIT*
That whole mess starts on page 49 at post #485: https://www.tahoeyukonforum.com/threads/growing-up-doesnt-have-to-suck.93510/page-49#post-1424288

Ok so you remove and installed it without heads and intake? Honestly that sounds easier if you're doing it alone anyway.

I did the DOD delete myself over 2 days and the cleaning was the longest part. Putting the heads on and bolting down would be like 30 minutes if everything was cleaned already.

Seems less chance of ******* something up just doing the block alone. Probably longer time, but less stress for sure.

Affirmative. Main reason was access to the top four bellhousing bolts. The engine can be pulled with the mounts still bolted to it and radiator in place. Just pull the fans and turn the engine sideways. The mounts clear the core support and cowl by about 1/2".

That's awesome. So nothing on the front clip has to be pulled at all?

Some guys pull the front end off for more access. Randy did that on his and I remember twisted the motor sideways when he lifted it out. Pics are on his build thread. Another fella also documented his very well but I forget his name. I think it was an Avalanche and he did it half in and out of the garage with garbage bags to keep the weather at bay.

Mine was mostly just a simple swap. Leave the front of the truck on and plenum off. No exhaust bolts broke thanks to a good soak. Very worth while swap, better MPG and the L9h has some good power.

There is a good deal on a 1K mile L9H for 3500 if interested in Rochester NY .

Thanks.

Weird that someone would put an engine in then immediately take it out though.

Si.

Just pull the fans and slip a piece of plywood or heavy cardboard in to protect the rad in case it gets away from you. You separate the block from the trans, come up and forward a little, rotate it, then forward more, then up and out.

If it's in the budget, I would. Nothing crazy, though. 5-6 hundred RPM makes a big difference, even on a stock motor. If camming, a looser converter may be even more helpful dependent upon that cam. There are a lot of factors that you have to honestly weigh, though.

Do you tow? How much weight?

I will be towing, yes. Not sure on weight yet, son is just getting to an age where we can do stuff like camping and/or boating.

I was referring to ZL1 torque converter. It stalls around 2200 and they're built tough.
