Just took my 07 Denali xl with 220k on the clock to the tranny shop. It was making some weird shifts from 1-2 and slamming hard. Short story is tranny is shot and the driver side motor mount is broken. It’s $7800 to repair everything. What would you guys do? Pay the price, waiting for the engine to need replacing or throw in the towel and sell as is/look for a newer one?

I would move on more so it’s just an old truck now unless you have some sentimental attachment. The newer ones from 2015+ have so much more to offer.

Also if the truck still moves a dealer would probably just give you the trade in value if you purchase a truck from them.

Since the 2021+ models have been out the 2015-2020 ones are very reasonable priced now.

If you want to YOLO get a 2025+ the new redesign is great.

were not all rich.... easier for me to drop 3-4k into what I know i have and what the maintenance status is.
I can put that amount on a no interest cc and not pay a cent in interest.
versus 50k on a used vehicle, with what if I am lucky 5-6% interest, +downpayment
then within 5 years I lost 25k in value, + 3-4k+ in interest
that interest charge alone I fixed my current ride.... which is already depreciated.
that's a win in my book, I don't care if the neighbor has a new lambo, he cant take it to heaven

then the hummer mount

total for both is approx $2k + tax, the rest is all labor + fluids, plus you could throw a billet torque converter (if not fitted already) in it and off go

I have been noticing that too. A non-cracking dash sure would be sweet!
(I already spent too much $$ on my truck, I'll have to go for a rebuild when my time comes...)

Maybe another $1k for a shop to swap it out? (with rear main seal)
~$500 for a converter?

220k on the motor..
You might get another 100k out of it?
Plan for an engine swap just in case...

Like @Doubeleive said. If the truck you got meets your needs, is not bashed all to hell on the outside, is paid off and you have taken reasonable care of it and the insurance is not way too much, keep what you know about. I would get some other quotes for the transmission. If you look here at this forum, you will see many stories of people getting newer unknown trucks and are sorry they did and stories of all the extra added crap that comes with them.

if taken care of, sure I have put these over 300k before
dash can be covered, that's really the only cosmetic fault
I don't know man, I tend to take care of what I have my vehicles are ready to cross country anytime, all my maintenance is done I might flush the brake fluid in the spring.....
knowing the transmission is a weak spot I had mine over-built on purpose
I could probably use to freshen up the seat covers, that's the only thing mine could use cosmetically
I probably wouldn't mind having a 2020 k2 denail, but I am not big on push button start nor the 10 speed transmission, don't need the nannies either.
I might settle for early 2015 (Denali) with the 6 speed and see if I can swap out the steering column for a keyed one. Wouldn't be my first rodeo with a 1st year model.

And you really want to deal with , the major repairs people are facing out of warranty on anything newer than a 2015? You may think that 6-speed transmission is expensive, the wait till you have 65,000 miles on a 10-speed and see the price for one of those.

$3500 is what a GMPP warranty is for 100k miles and 9 yrs on a 2026 Tahoe.

Yes there are so many electronics and modules on the new ones I agree, I’m handy but for this truck I’m getting the warranty. The newer trucks are pretty insane with all the electronics and gizmos. The wife loves it though!

I’m 45 so I’m at the YOLO stage of life! Giddy up.

If it's a cream puff, then an economical repair like a good used transmission from an auto recycler, and a few parts could be money well spent.

If it's rusty, or used up in other areas, I'd take the money and find a new-to-you lower mile version.

GM dealerships offer reman 6L80s with a 3 year, 100K mile nationwide warranty for about $5k installed if memory serves.

Do you want a regular car payment or just pull out the debit card when the truck needs something?

There are aftermarket dashes with digital gauges like the new cars now, same with the nav unit and stereo controls so you can run modern apps and enjoy that newer tech if it's important to you.

The person that I spoke was Zach, and this is his direct number: 512-884-5001

FULL TRANSPARENCY: I do not know anything about these folks. I just did a quick online search, after reading your post, and this is what came back. I made the online inquiry to get a price, and Zach called me back within 5 minutes. Give Zach a call, it can't hurt.

So, you DO have available options, if you want to keep the truck, which of course is your decision alone to make.

I would get another opinion, in my opinion (lol)

Doesn't hurt to see what another shop says. I don't know know much about transmissions, but I wonder if 1) your fluid is low or 2) a fluid change would help.

If you REALLY like your truck, there's a 10 speed swap kit to put the 10 speeds on the GMT900s. Doesn't exactly solve your question if the 10 speeds are reliable, though...
