Are the new 6.2 starters backwards compatible?

Probably will be replacing my starter soon.

The faster crank speed sounds better in the brand new trucks, IMO. Didn't know if a newer starter would fit on an L94.

Mine might just be so old and cranky that it sounds slow when a new OEM one would sound like the brand new trucks...

Just a thought. Might be a stupid question.

Maybe, the specs on rockauto show a '25 model with different flange to pinion specs and 15 teeth vs 11 for ours.
Aftermarket starters are said to fit 168 tooth flywheels, without discerning type or year...

Crank speed is more often dependent upon battery condition and battery cable/ connections integrity. How are yours?

I recommend that you purchase a GM or Bosch starter spec'd for your year motor and call it a day.

The later model have two terminals, for the auto start/stop system. It can activate the solenoid separately from the motor.
The only info I could find on the old starters was that it was approx a 5:1 gear reduction, and the newer starter is 5.67:1 ratio , and the manual says new type are un-repairable.

Battery is 8 months old and no idea on the connections. I can only assume the starter is original and getting a little tired.

Big 3 mod might be something I need to put on my list since I sometimes have headlights that dim. Big 3 could maybe improve crank speed if a new starter wouldn’t.

If your headlights are dimming, you need to get your battery bench load tested (out of the truck and onto a bench next to the load tester, and not the in-the-truck semi-useless measures). While you have the battery disconnected and out of the truck, you can install the Big 3, and that will eliminate the possibility of corroded battery cables (they corrode from the inside out).

I know for sure it’s not a battery thing since it was happening with the old battery. I also didn’t cheap out on a battery and got one with decent cold cranking amps, not like that helps with the dimming though.

A new higher amp alternator helped a ton since my old one died. The headlights rarely dim but I’ll notice my interior lights sometimes pulse.

Is there a kit to do the big 3 anywhere? I don’t have the tools to be able to crimp a connection onto a thick gauge wire like that. (Edit: looks like there’s a ton of kits online… scratch that lol.)

OK. So, that perhaps rules out the battery (unless you have a parasitic draw, which will destroy a new battery in a matter of a few months) as the source of your issue. Following the path that the electricity takes, the next step would be to install the Big 3, and remove cables from being a potential source of your issue.

And, yes, it should be really easy for you to pick up a set of wires in a kit. Another option is to remove your existing battery and alternator cables, take them to an audio shop, and have them make up a custom set of new cables for you. They have the wire, the connectors, and the tools.

starters do get weak but also I feel like there's 2 different amp rating ones for these years? seems to remember part numbers around here somewhere.


also can go aftermarket. I'm sure there's high tq high speed aftermarket race starters for these ls engines.
