'01 Denali Map Lights on -w- Domes.

Yeah. I know. This has been covered a number of times. But, when the question of '00 or '01 comes up, the reply is 'There's a write up for that somewhere', or 'You just do this or that...'. Plus all the pics I've seen, show connecting the resistors between the map light and the dome. Well, in the front roof console, there is no dome light. Just, maps, and HVAC, etc.

Is there a specific write up, for the '00 and/or '01 Denali that shows how to do this for the front map lights?

I don't know if not having a sunroof will make it easier but you should be able to get the power pulled from the monitor to the dome light at least! Let me know how it goes for you!

Almost there.

Two more questions...

1. Does it matter which side of the bulb/socket I tap into in the Video Unit?

2. Do we have to use 2 resistors... One for each map light? Or, will one resistor be sufficient, if it's in the main wire coming from the source?

To answer your questions:

1. Just need to tap into a wire that only gets power whenever the interior lights are on, and if you can confirm that with a voltmeter than I'd choose that wire!

2. Probably can use one resistor if it's in the main feed line going to the lights before it splits off to each light, I never did it that way because I couldn't figure out a good sturdy way to do it so I did it the way I did!

Glad someone else is gonna try this mod, I love having the extra light on when I open the doors and was jealous of the folks with the newer trucks that already had that option!

Do you have LED's for your lighting already or are you going to do it in the future?

I was considering LEDs. But, money's kinda tight. Christmas, you know.

Besides, I just finished replacing the bulbs in my lower console DIC, and HVAC control panel.

Ahah!

I see why we need 2 resistors, one to each map light. I wired just one to the main line for my source. And. now, BOTH map lights turn on with either switch.

No big deal. If it seems to be a problem, I'll just rewire the map lights with 2 resistors.

That's the easiest to work with. Holding up the video screen was a bear. And, trying to run the wire above the headliner was a beyotch. If I ever do that again, I'd probably run the wire down to the 'under dash' light.

Also, there are three wires from the truck to the video unit, marked "Dome Lights". The red was an always hot wire. And, I tested the purple wire. That came on as Dome lights, which I assume was the "Auto" feed for those lights. I'm guessing the Black wire was to feed the "ON" side of the switch.

Anyway, my Map Lights come on with my Dome Lights. And, that makes me very happy.

I like it so much, I may change all the dome lights to LEDs.

Yeah, I can't fully remember what my trial and error all was for this mod, I almost thing I did the one resistor for both lights and it didn't work just can't remember if I did it the way you did! And having a sunroof actually made it super easy to run the wire, was able to open the sunroof and do most of my work from there, was gonna run it down a pillar to my footwell lights originally but the monitor was way easier!

If you do LED's in the future, do yourself and buy canbus style LED's for all the lights that have switches to turn them on separately from just opening the doors to turn them on. My truck had a dimming problem when you first would turn on a light manually if I hadn't opened a door to trigger a different circuit to give full voltage to the bulb, other '01 and '02 owners had the same problem and it took us quite a while to figure out why and the solution to it.
