Need some input from you Guys. My denali 08 is going to be on it's forth rack in 4 years. The center bushing on the gm rebuilds is crap it breaks down very quickly. I have been trying to figure out what to do to make it stronger. The rack is held on with straps I believe and floats. I wondering if you lifted and heavily nodded Guys ever seen anyone modify how one is mounted or added dampers or found a better bushing. So far the Internet serves have yielded nothing.

Damn, man. Going through a rack a year is crazy unless you're driving 200k miles per year. Lol

wow....between this and motor mounts you've been having a lot of problems in areas that I've not had any issues at all. Really bizarre.

I've replaced the driver's side mount on mine, but no issues with the rack. Even with 165k on my truck. Seems like something else is wrong that's putting added stress on the rack. Even after replacing the original rack with a remanufactured unit, it shouldn't be going bad EVERY year. That's just crazy stuff...

Yeah, mines got about 165k on it too. I agree as well that it sounds like something is putting undue stress on it. Can you see if it's binding anywhere, Joe?

It's where I park. I park in a underground valet garage and they constantly have to full lock the steering to maneuver. That and the big wheels does nightmares. The motor mounts also beat up the rack.

I'm still doing research here. I will have a solution soon.

For the record it's not the racks functionality. The racks work fine. It's the center mounting bushing that gets weak and allows too much play. Many people have the play and it doesn't bother them. It drives me crazy.

What would the symptoms of this play be? What would I notice? I can say that I DON'T notice any play in the wheel, etc. Just wondering what you're experiencing that's causing you to replace racks every year.

they don't make a pitman/idler brace for the 1500's do they? the cognito stuff on my 2500 tightened up the front end nicely with the 33's

This is the main support for the rack. They wear out super fast.

It's those big wheels and the valets cranking the wheel left and right, probably with the truck stationary that's killing your bushings.

While I have NO clue how big those bushings are, they do have that gap that I've seen on other GM vehicle rear end cradle bushings. Those wanting more performance-oriented drivers of those cars have updated the bushings, and/or used inserts that insert delrin into those open areas with little-to-no increase in NVH. Perhaps it's something to look at:

I understand the bushings are going out, but you said this play drives you crazy. Is it just because you know the play is there, or is there some perceptible feel in the steering wheel when they go out?

When the bushings go you feel the road in the steering wheel. It's a complete 360 from how it feels with fresh bushings and a right front end.

I feel just about every little bump in the road, but it "rides" good if that makes any sense. I always assumed I could feel everything through the wheel because of the oversized wheels and drop spindles because it almost goes away when I put the stock wheels back on. Maybe my rack needs replaced. I do have 170k miles on my truck...

Depends on how tight your front end is ball joints n such. If everything is worn equally I

would just leave it.

what if we made those bushings solid? say with aluminum or steel? or a mix? i have access to a lathe and just made new dif mounts for my audi- pretty lathe happy at the moment. can make some solids if these things are crapping out on you all the time.

On the Camaro they make a poly insert for the similar type bushings that he rear its on. That would be the best route.
