Just bought a Spectre 9900 CAI off craigslist new in the box for $50.00. Don't really notice a difference in hp. Hope to get at least 1 mpg more tho.

Just do the swiss cheese mod. Then you will have just as much increase as the spectre without all the heat problems.

Here is a thought for the heat soak. The tube is polished correct? Any metal that is polished will absorb/hold the heat worse than one that isn't polished. If it is that bad get it powdercoated or paint it to help reflect the heat. Try a dark color. I had an 02 cbr954rr with a matte black frame and my buddy had one that was polished, the polished frame got so friggin hot you could barely stand to touch it. My black frame got warm but not anything close to the temp of the polished frame. If anybody is willing to paint one and has a infared temp gun do a before and after temp and compare. I'm willing to bet the painted one will be cooler. Just my 2 cents!

Paint it white.

Wasn't the old hot rod trick to paint the underside of the intake manifold white to help reflect the radiant heat?

Also is the air even in the tube long enough to soak up the heat?

You would need to do a comparison with a temp probe in the airstream right by the throttle body to see if the actual air temps are different. The factory IAT is probably close to the filter right? (Sad I don't know where it is on my own truck) I think a reading right before the throttle body would give the best reading to see if the air is even soaking up the heat.

Just my 2 cents.

yeah,

I love the sound.
I'm very glad to get rid of all that piping under the hood.

BTW,
this is one of the least expensive CAI kits I've ever had

no need for a temp gun,
and it dosn't really matter what temp the air is when sitting in a driveway

what matters are the IAT's (Intake Air Tempatures) when driving
that can be observed using the engine's computer and factory sensors.

just plug in a laptop.
get real time IAT's while driving.

(I forgot to do any data logging before changing my intake pipe)

couldn't hurt to wrap it or ceramic paint it

So has anyone wrapped or painted their CAI pipe yet? My Spectre gets too hot to touch as well. I have no idea if my stock plastic pipe got this hot.
