Worn out door hinges

I've struggled with a loose driver side door since I bought my truck. I think I'm on the 3rd rebuild of the hinges now and want to lay this issue to rest! The other three passenger doors are PEFECT but the driver is LOOSE (video links below).

Bleeping GM welded the hinges to the door and pillar so there's no way to replace them other than bushing kits and the holes on the hinges are warn too big (I think). I think most of the car makers are doing that now...

I bought an oversized bushing kit but I'll be darned, it was WAY too big to fit. I tried to press them in but the bushings just deformed! Not to mention if I ream out the pieces welded to the doors then I'm going to have an even harder time if this happens again.

Long story short, anybody else here been able to resolve this problem?

I replaced the door hinge bushings on my 99 Silverado back around, maybe 2011 or so. Pretty sure they were Dorman and they still working fine.

That photo with pin cockeyed looks pretty bad.

Yeah, no newer vehicle is going to have anything else but welded hinges. I would imagine if you fabricate an alignment jig of sorts, you can reweld another replacement hinge?

I wouldn't trust my welding. However if I did do it I'd find a way to put a bold on hinge sp it could be adjusted or replaced.

I ran in to the same problem on a friend's 2005 Tahoe LS, driver's door. I did the hinge pin replacements, yea that door removal is a PITA, and still had enough play that I know the hinge itself is wallowed out where the bushings fit. Still have to slam door to get closed properly. Loose enough that I replaced the door actuator/latch assembly but it will go again with the play that is still there. The play got better but is not gone. She plans to take to a local body shop for the hinge repair/replacement. I asked her to tell me the estimate price.

Yeah door sucks to get out... just so heavy.

I may get a quote on new hinges.

Good point. Wish my 3rd grade teacher had good humor. Then I might be able to spell!

I ordered their kit and their oversized bushings. They probably spent 30 minutes with me on the phone. They've thought out all the issues I've encountered.

I'll have to report back on how they work.

Did you ask about this statement and what tools they are talking about or did they offer this info?

I have thousands of $ worth of tools but will I need something else to install these?

Is the $80 for one, or for the case quantity of 40? If case quantity, can they be purchased in smaller quantities?

It was $80 for one hinge.

If oversized bushings are needed that was an additional cost.

They are awesome if you just call them up. Derek is the sales guy and Ron designed the parts.

Ron also designed a part to press the hinge pin out. It has an interference fit with the inner hinge. Many people punch them out with a hammer and or chisel. This tends to deform the welded on parts of the hinges.

You can buy the little tool which he lists on his website. I didn't need it. I don't recall how I originally removed the pins... however, you could use a large socket, and something on end of c clamp to press it out.

Aftermarket pins don't have that interference fit so if you've rebuild it before you may not need the tool.
