I’m pretty sure that the “norm” is little to no oil consumption on these engines. I don’t think I am an outlier as I drive short distances and tow heavy double axle boat/trailer mostly with the AC running - severe driving conditions according to the manual. Maybe if I waited longer than 5k miles for oil change I might see a small change on the dipstick but I doubt that.

Also I park in the same spot in my garage and always check the floor for any leaks. I had the garage floor redone a couple years ago (Ox Floor) and it would be very easy to see any drips.

I still maintain it is not normal for new engine to burn or leak that much oil that you have to add a quart or more between oil changes. Even if it is a Ford lol

Like it or not, GM considers any consumption less than 1qt/1000 miles normal. Work with your dealer, not against them.

And what is the GM recommended OCI on these trucks? 5k miles? So in this theory if you change the oil every 5k miles, and burned through 1qt/per 1k miles, the engine would be running on 3 quarts of oil at the time of the oil change and GM would just be like, “yeh, all good. Totally normal. Nothing to see here”

.. lmao ..

Doubt it

Sorry, it’s 1qt in 2000 miles. See:

Better; but still laughable BS that a current model year vehicle that shows up for an oil change at the prescribed OCI with 5.5 quarts of oil when the vehicle was designed for 8 quarts is considered normal .

Per the linked TSB:

“If the oil consumption test shows that the engine uses less than 0.946 liter (1 qt) in 3200 km (2000 mi), explain to the customer that their engine meets the guidelines for oil consumption.”

lol and then i will “explain” to the service writer that the guidelines for oil consumption are a complete joke . . .

These modern engines use technology that is tough on engines and especially the oil. Active Fuel Management, Dynamic Fuel Management, start stop, variable valve timing, turbo charging, etc. All these new technologies put a lot of stress on the oil. Not all oils are up to the task and that's why GM and other oem's have been pushing for better oil specifications to be developed. Yet there are a lot of oil companies who market "good enough" products and customers who refuse to spend the money, continue to buy these "good enough" products for their expensive vehicles/engines. They think frequent oil changes are cheap insurance but in reality, cheap oil is the problem.

Why do you think some oils are cheaper? Where do you think they cut the corners?
Did they use cheaper oil base stocks and additive packages? Did they cut back on quality control? How can they afford to spends millions of $$ on advertising and sell their oil so cheap and still make money if they claim their oil is best?

I must be lucky. I can't perceive any oil use in 2500 miles.
Same, and I know this because I follow the advice in the owners manual to check the oil! You must do that too.

In my opinion, the single best way to prevent and discover engine issues is checking your oil level at every fill up.

I have observed the same thing. This is probably normal, think about all (most?) of the people who never ever check the oil and go longer than 6-7k miles between oil changes.
If oil consumption was normal most of these vehicles would be running on half capacity!

Yep...I bet there is a pretty fair share of owners who never even open the hood between services and if the vehicle doesn't tell them there is something wrong then they assume there is nothing wrong. It's sad.... but reality.....
