@wsteele did you give up on this investigation?

I kind of did. I did get my monitors reset (all but the evap, which wouldn't get me busted during a test, which is coming up this year), I am not exactly sure when they all were done, but it was between 340 and 386 miles and between 10-12 cold starts, some warm starts thrown in when running errands).

As far as whether it is plugging the Range device in or pulling it out that set the monitors to "not ready" (assuming you have to pull it out for emissions), I assumed it was when pulling it out, as Sparksalot did have his monitors (except evap) showing ready after putting his in. I was going to test it with the Y cable to be certain it is when pulling it out, but my emissions will be coming up soon and if I got the notice, I didn't want to have to drive some 400 miles to reset the monitors again before going down and getting the test.

I will say that I just ordered 4 new O2 sensors as I was going through my maintenance records, checking to see what I have done and what might be coming up and found I had never replaced any O2 sensors since new. That may have had an impact on how long it took to reset the monitors as O2 sensors were two of the monitors "not ready" for most of the driving time. I suspect how long it takes to reset monitors may have something to do with the condition of the emissions equipment in the car. My stuff is mostly all original, with only the EVAP selonoid having been replaced at 63K.

Anyway, I sold my Range device on eBay. I got $150 for it, so I was happy.

I had my range in for a while, even drove 450 miles on Thursday, and that evap test wouldn’t finish.

as a test, I pulled the range out. All the smog stuff was a mess, for about a minute, then everything settled down okay. Except evap.

figure I’ll call it good, and take it in as is when smog time comes.

Well thank you for how far you took it. It was interesting.

This was a fantastic thread, although it took me a few months to read and ask some ?’s.

Does the range device “go to sleep” when you shut the truck off or does is stay on and cause battery drain?

I’m sick of the AFM, been looking on a permanent disable but can’t spare the down time to send out the computer.

Looking online for the Range unit and see it for the most part the same price everywhere. But if it’s going to cause a battery drain even if it’s for a day or two, I’m gonna find the time to send out the computer.

The instructions say to unplug it if the truck will be unused for a few days, so it's on and drawing a small amount all the time. I've never found that to be a problem and I've had it for several years. I don't unplug it unless I'm going away for a couple of weeks or something.
