GVW Error (Gross Vehicle Weight) when towing

Has anyone else seen this error when towing? I'm towing a 5,100lbs boat trailer with 550lbs tongue weight. Vehicle only has 4 people in it and all the gear is in the boat. I've had it weighed and am no where near my max trailering weight of 8400lbs. Dealer has no idea why i'm getting it either. Basically, the car things it's overweight and yelling at me.

My only thought: I have air ride suspension and i have lifting links that took me up .5" to get a cleaner ride. I'm wondering if while daily driving the car thinks I've just always got more stuff since it has a higher PSI to keep it at the set height BUT when i'm towing it's putting so much air to keep it there that it thinks it's overweighted.

My next step is to swap to my original links and test that theory but that's going to require a free weekend day to play with that. Otherwise I'm at a total loss.

I’d 100% return to stock configuration before messing with anything else….. good luck.

I think that your theory is correct. Let us know the results.

The lift links are def messing with your calibration. Or the trailer is not entered correctly in the app.

I take it you can't just turn that nanny off?, seems like you should have a check box in the settings to uncheck and carry on

I don't know anything about lift links or air ride suspensions but I hope that's causing the problem and it's easily remedied.

If it doesn't, I'd re-check your weights to make sure you haven't exceeded your Tahoe's GCWR. It sounds like your rig had quite the load.

Well I put the factory links back in and when that GVWR toggle is on it still tells me I’m over weight. Tongue weight (measured) is 650lbs fully loaded and the trailer is about 6200lbs. Both are well within the 8400 max towing for my Yukon XL.

It’s going into the dealer on Wednesday to have them take a look BUT yes you can turn it off. The question is WHY is it thinking that.

It's possible you are close to your total payload capacity (GVRW) with that load even though the trailer weight is well within the vehicle's capabilities. I did some research using a 2026 Yukon Denali 4x4 as an example. The total payload capacity before adding tongue weight is about 1,500lbs. That reduces to 900lbs (assuming a 50lbs ball if you use an adjustable) when you add 550lbs of tongue weight. If you've got 4 people that weigh 200lbs each, you've used 800lbs of that capacity. Add gear and you're at or exceeding your GVRW.

Do you have a bunch of stuff stored in your storage compartments int he rear of your truck? Maybe that's throwing off the tongue weight calculation somehow.

I’ve already played the game of emptying out the car, no people, even ran the boat gas tank all the way down to see if that would help. No luck and same error.

Dropped the car off at service today and they are going to look into it but doing some more reading GM does call out that it’s only an “estimate” and to actually weigh the car/trailer to verify.
