Here is a write up and list of parts from someone who used a gen 3 in a gen 4 truck.

These are my thoughts and my unprofessional opinion from what I’ve gathered so far... If someone just wants a really simple swap with a mostly stock engine that they do not want to tear into, then it makes zero sense to use the gen 3. However, if I already have plans of going through the engine completely, then it doesn’t seem like much more effort would be needed. An LY6 might be ideal, but I’m not yet convinced it’s worth the hassle of selling the LQ4 and finding/paying a bit more for an LY6.

thoughts?

If the 6.0/4l80 comes with a new computer, harness, everything... why would it be an issue at all?? Unless it’s better to use the original computer. Forgive my ignorance... going to be learning a lot here

have fun paying for that 6.2... LQ4s are awesome platforms and more than capable. The 4L80 will definitely work and that in itself isn’t too difficult of a conversion
Randy and a few other guys on here have put a 4L80 in their 900s, check out their builds.

I'm not knocking the motor and trans combination Dave, it is a great set up, for the GMT800s.

Anyone know what menu for the TPMS set point? I want to adjust mine.

It's in the BCM under the RCDLR (Remote Control Door Lock Receiver).

What I am more worried about is getting a 6l80 in my truck with the shifter switch. I would love to buy an l94 with the 6l80 but idk how that part will work. The engine is easy peasy for me. Tranny not so much.

Chris has spent a lot of time investigating this. You would need a new cluster as well. @iamdub

Does it work good for you? Can you leave the bottle in it to drain out without things falling? Tight corner back there.

It depends on the angle of the fill tube in a particular vehicle. I’ve not needed to add any fluid to the Hoe so I can’t say about this vehicle in particular.

I’ve also got a larger funnel with one of those flexible corrugated spouts for difficult spots. But that one takes about three hands to operate.

Only thing I can think of is cam sensor location is different as well as knock sensors. You will need to alter the harness. Nothing in that article stated they used the gen3 or 4 harness. You should not use the gen3 because of canbus and other e38 ecm features that gen3 doesn’t have. Also DBW.

If you use a 58x gear you won’t need the box.

My 02 Denali /LQ4 has DBW. ‘02 was the year the Denali’s switched to it, not sure about any of the others like Esky etc.

Is this the box? If so it looks like it’s only for converting 58x to 24x, not the other way. 58x gear sounds like the way to go.

So far it seems like 58x reluctor, gen IV timing cover and 4x timing gear, relocate knock sensors, and use my factory gen IV harness and computer. That doesn’t seem too bad...

I think it was only on the LQ4’s and LQ9’s. And some 02’s had dbw and some dbc. Just wanted to get it out there that dbw wasn’t just a gmt900- up feature.
Could also be early 02 and late 02 meant dbw or dbc since it was a mid year switch. Just like the.mid year swap of obs/nbs body style--maybe.

My buddies 2001 Suburban is a DBW.
