87 octane vs 91 octane

40 something thousand miles on the wife's '16 Denali and we have never put anything other than 87 in it. Never had an issue with any spark knock, and the thing consistently gets around 20+- MPG driving around town.

When you say town, you must mean a lot of rural roads at ~40-50 mph without many stops. I live in a city, and no matter how much I baby it. I'm never going to get close to 20mpg. We have traffic, and a bunch of red lights or stop signs every where we go.

Correct... kind of. Mainly 55 MPH roads, but no highway/freeways. Small amount of stop and go city type driving mixed in as well, but certainly not a tank-full of it.

good thing you dont drive in NYC. some places u can barely go 300ft without hitting a stop sign. city speed limit is 25mph and highway is 50mph

I live in cape coral florida and we usually get about 14-16 city. 22mpg on highway. We also use 89 gas.

That's like idling all day, I'd be lucky to get 10 mpg in the big apple! My wife wants us to drive up for her Dad's 70th Birthday. I don't mind driving my truck up there, I do mind some jerk trying to steal it or something out of it. Should I insist on a garage when visiting the Bronx?

Depends where in the bronx you are going. I think you’d be hard pressed to even find one there. Manhattan on the other hand, garages every block but you pay a premium for a ‘large suv’ i leave mine on the street when we go to the city.... and our trucks are a dime a dozen down there....

There are probably more Suburbans per square block in NYC than most cities. But things do happen sometimes. Just don’t leave anything visible inside.

EFI University tested their LT1 engine on their engine dyno on both 87 and 91 octane to compare the differences. 87 octane resulted in a greater than 50hp loss over 91 octane.

The LT1 is identical to your engine with the exception of the intake manifold, which has no bearing on the type of fuel needed.

I thought the LTI was TPI, the 2015+ 6.2L and 5.3L are direct injected, quite a bit of difference. As you know, pre-detonation is more controllable. The 5.3l recommended fuel is 87 octane and that motor is running 11:1 compression. The 6.2l L86 has 11.5:1, likely why 91 recommended, 87 won’t hurt it, but will lose power/torque and mpg. That said, my 6.2l is getting better mpg than my 2015 5.3.

Yup, Riverdale late 90’s... last stop on the 1/9.....broke into my ‘79 monte and took the change outta the ashtray...left the kenwood tho. Tried to break column and steal it but messed it so i had to hotwire it....as im doing that cops show up and almost arrest me.... the real 5-0......50th precinct..... lol

i recall back in the 80's anyone who drove their car to a Yankees game and parked on the street got a busted window and a missing stereo HU. was part of the price of admission it seems.

all them burbs you see in NYC are black and have livery plates aka limo, taxi's or a car service. they all got high hours and miles.

T-Tops and interior gone, tires and wheels gone, sitting on rocks/blocks, unbelievable!

We usually fly into Newark as the car rentals are less expensive and if not staying with relatives, stay on the Jersey side too. Still trying to visit Floyd Bennett Field and would like to see the stern counter of the USS Enterprise CV-6 at a little league baseball field in Jersey about 20 minutes from the USS Ling. Wouldn't mind visiting Lake George and Fort Ticonderoga.

you need to go on the enterprise to get a good feel for it, its huge. ive not been on it since long before it was rehabbed, but i used to be able to drive my 24 foot boat right up to it pre 9-11, talk about feeling small.

you can park in NJ take the ferry over buy your tickets at the ferry take the blue buss's for free all over the city with your ferry ticket too.

the uss ling is no longer open, the land they used was sold out from under them, they had a one dollar lifetime lease that the dead owners son reneged on so they could build condos or some crap. comes to money in his pocket. the sub its self they say is stuck in the mud and the river is no longer deep enough to float it back down. so thats a issue right now, only thing saving them from not having to scrap it now is the sub is in the river, not the land, so theres not much the land owners can say about that part. it just might sit and rot to hell. i live like 5 miles from the USS ling. went on it when i was kid. that thing is tiny lol

lake george is super nice in the summer time, if you need a week of nothing to do, rent a house on the lake bring your fishing poles, theres only the one side of the lake thats busy, where all the shops are, if you have a boat at your house, (i towed mine up there, rented a house with a dock) you can take your boat there and dock at the public dock and go shopping.

they also have islands for camping, only way to and from is via your boat.

oh, and the stripped cars is somewhat a thing of the past, if you needed a car to disappear you parked it on the side of the cross bronx hwy just over the gwb and it would be a shell in 3 days time or less.

back in the 80's and early 90's ive seen guys with engine hoists pulling the engine, or taking the tranny and rears, doors seats, you name like a chop shop on the side of the road as you drive by lol

the police tow them off pretty fast if left on the hwy, to quick to strip em down.

CV-6 was scrapped in 1958. I think you mean the Intrepid. I've been on the Intrepid and a few other Essex class carriers. It's sad to see what's happened to the Ling. My relatives lives just minutes away and only went because I took them. We've been there three times, the last was 2005 and her bow and stern were rotted away at the waterline. The Drum and Pompanito are so much better preserved. The majority of the people over there just don't care and it's because of that rotgut schooling and turning them all into SJWs. I followed the purchase and restoration of the PBR closely in the 1990s.

That's EXACTLY where I'm talking about! Same neighborhood my wife grew up in.

Yup, all that was pretty common in NYC until Giuliani cleaned it up in the 1990's. Amazing what a extra police presence will do to city crime.
