What do you consider High Mileage?

In the next few months, I am considering a 2004-2006 Tahoe. I am curious what others thing is "High mileage" on these trucks. The used market has vehicles from 50k-175k. It's hard to judge what is even worth looking at.

Anything I should avoid?
What are some of the common replacement items that should be looked for?

Thoughts comments suggestions are welcomed!

That is not a deal breaker though....

Some cars look like a crap after 50k.

One owners as always are better to get....but not necessary.....

I never judge a car by it's mileage. I always like to see it in person.

If you compared my 2001 Tahoe with 151k miles to one of my family members 2000 Suburban with 97k; they are worlds apart mechanically and cosmetically. Their Suburban has been through hell and back. Zero scheduled maint.

For me 150k is starting to get high.If you can try and get the perfect match,Low miles and taken care of.

Yep generally the ranch guys that drive highway everyday to the city are the guys that generally take care of their trucks. Those are good high millage rides. A high millage for me is 300k+ chevys last that and more my 92 only has 176k and easily will make another with the engine and trans rebuilt

For these big heavy vehicles, 100K is high to me. By that time you need to start putting money aside for suspension rebuilding which is very expensive if you're not rebuiding them yourself.

Also, I'm not a fan of the GM 4spd 4L6x automatic transmissions as those tend to see pretty high failure rates even before 100K miles in the trucks and SUVs.

I bough mine a year ago with 82K miles planning for the possibility of the trans going out on me before 100K miles but found a pleasant surprise in that I had a fully warranted rebuilt trans put in around 80K miles.

I am in the process now of gathering all the parts necessary to rebuild the front and rear suspensions. I have quite a bit of bumping in my front end and some shimmy in the rear over bumps.

I also rebuilt the suspension in my Trailblazer around 80K miles. You'd be surprised how loose/worn these heavy vehicles feel even before 100K miles.

My opinion of the GMs is that the engines if taken care of last 200K+ miles, the tranny and the suspensions though seem to be the weak spots in addition to the electrical systems with all the gadgets modern vehicles have today.

Well of course the higher the mileage you'll have to start maintaining them. Doesn't mean they are piles of junk just cuz they are at 100k miles. Most vehicles(GM or not) will be good reliable vehicles into the 300k range if properly maintained but it's owner(s).

I have 240,000 on mine, I bought it with 160,000. The Guy that owned it before me took great care of it, had a new motor put in at about 130,000 and a new tranny at 140,000. He showed all receipts and anytime any thing was wrong with it he fixed it. I could tell by how clean he kept everything and how good the truck runs. So sometimes it depends on how the people before you took care of it.

^^^x2 mileage almost doesn't matter if its been taken care of 129k on mine and runs great. Aiming for 300k.

165 and she is like a top. Built the trans almost 2 years ago. But motor and suspension electronics. She is perfection. Perfect body and paint.


Maintenance is key. I have seen 5 year old cars with 60k on them look like shit run like crap and need to be crushed. And I know a guy with a 92 1500 w/T Chevy and it has over 3 burns a quart every other week. But it's like a rock. Maintenance is key.

I'm shooting for 300 an by them I can swap a cool motor or give to my kid. Or whatever. She has been paid for from day one. So she is worth more to me than market value.

my 01 tahoe has 151k and never had a major issue. Runs perfect.
my wifes 03 Yuk has 115k and same thing, no issues, runs perfect.

Ive never had problems qith suspension on my gm. My old trailblazer had over 100k and drove like a sports car even tho it was 4x4. All i did to it was shocks and general maintnence. If you treat em right then they treat you right

Yeah, I had an 89' GMC truck, that all I do was regular oil changes and of coarse fixed minor issues that came up, had to rebuild the tranny once, and the truck ran great I think I sold it with 220,000 miles on it, and I was 16-19 when I owned it, so of coarse I dogged the crap out of it, made me realize how good GM trucks are.

200k on a 1990 and 200k on a 2010 is two different things.

Older trucks had less crap to break.... and throw out less DTC's.

If you're talking about sensors they are easy to replace

Yes....

But stuff like ..... um.....

Like the airbag in the roof, they replaced it in my 2009....... threw the service airbag light forever......

The dealership finally replaced it under warranty.... I was lucky.

Things like this under customer pay is $$$. Older trucks had less crap and had less issues.

I am not bashing new cars ..... Lord knows I have a garage full.....just saying.
