Tore down my old transmission today to see what I was going to need for the rebuild. Found this in the pan when I replaced it last month.

Do you know if that Transmission had been rebuilt before? The guy that went through my Transmission said he was having trouble with "new" planetary gears doing just that. I don't know if he was talking after market or OEM. He was at the point he was buying all the good used ones he could find.

Not that I know of. Nothing in there gave me any indication that it had been torn apart before. Everything looked pretty well used. If it was rebuilt, it was a while ago.

After further inspection and showing a guy at work, it has been apart before.

That's a pretty impressive failure. Any idea what led to it or did it just grenade like that? Even more impressive that you got home with it.
As of now, no. It went out exactly 1 week after I bought it so I didn’t really have it long enough to notice any symptoms. When I went up to buy it and checked the fluid everything was checking out fine. Fluid wasn’t brand new indicating he changed it to try and hide something but wasn’t dark and burnt either. Level was also good. Shifts felt good other than a 2-3 clunk at light throttle that every 4l60e I’ve ever driven has had.
I didn’t think it was rebuilt until someone I worked with pointed out the brass bushings, which he said weren’t in these transmissions from GM.
From what I read, the only reason a rear planet would go like that is from lack of lubrication. Maybe he ran it low for a while and topped it off a few thousand miles before I bought it. Could’ve also been worn out before the rebuild and was reused instead of replaced. Just from the research I’ve done preparing for my rebuild, I can tell whoever rebuilt it didn’t upgrade the parts they should’ve.

Yup makes sense. I've also seen planets also go if they weren't reassembled properly. Some of them have indexing marks on the gears and need to go back together the exact same way they came apart. Either way, I'm sorry you got stuck with a botched repair or rebuild job on that thing, and your theory that it was run low on fluid also has merit based on the evidence.

Will you rebuild it yourself or have someone else do it? I did a ZF 5hp-24 on my workbench a few years ago and it worked out great. It was the first autobot I'd ever done and it was a great learning experience.

I’ll be rebuilding it myself. I’ve been a diesel mechanic for the past 6 years and done everything but a transmission rebuild and rear differential rebuild. I wanted to buy a core and rebuild it for the experience and maybe start a little side hustle if it worked out. didn’t plan on it happening this way.

Quest for a grey rear captain’s seat recline lever was successful yesterday at a small salvage yard I’d never been to. Did some touch up paint on the top. Got it all re-protected and cleaned up

Wiped the dust of parts boxes taking up space in the garage.

Installed replacement Z71 rear springs with new air bladders. Old vs New.

Installed rear Timbren bump stops. Had to disassemble the bump stop and press them into the cups on the frame. The way Timbren suggests did not work for me.

Truck sits 1” taller in the rear with new springs. May settle in a bit with time?

Not a bad way to spend the morning..
