Guess the black clamps are too big.. seemed right a year ago.. and I’ll likely be doing this again, since I’m out of the smaller ones.. oh well. Good for now.

Doing headliners is a pita. I've done quite a few. Once you get it out of the vehicle you need a good flat steady area to work in, possibly in a garage. Gotta scrape off all the old foam with a stiff metal brush. Make it as smooth as a surface as you can--whatever you leave behind will show through in the end. You need to get some really good contact cement, possibly a 3M product, or even the professional glue you spray from a spray/paint gun. I like working in 1/4's or 1/2's. It depends how big the headliner board is. It's best to have someone help you keep the material straight and taut. Once you spray both sides of the material--board and back of headliner material(foam)let them tack up--AND THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART--Lay it flat. Make sure there are no wrinkles, cuz you'll never get it out. Start laying it flat, I like to smooth it out with a flat plastic bondo spatula--and just smooth out the side you're working on as your buddy is holding the other side, making sure there's no wrinkles. Believe me--if you can take it out and afford to pay someone to do it--DO IT! By the time you add up your time and materials--forget about if you mess it up--you'll probably be close to $150 anyway.

Just FYI, not on our rides but paid $300 for headliner for a Jeep XJ and my neighbor paid $400 for his 2004 Silverado Crew Cab to be done. This was in 2019. Shop did a fantastic job and matched factory color perfectly on both. Like Tony said, they are a PITA to do so well worth it if you find a reputable shop.

I tried that with an RCSB head liner and within a month it started to sag again because the glue I used couldn't withstand Florida summer.

you dont use glue, use contact cement, 3m makes it in a spray can, its made for this type of work. also steaming reactivates the cement and makes it stick better.

mine was also starting to fall along the windshield and the drivers door. as well as the work truck i drive, i used that spray to fix em both and they are still holding up for the last two years now.

There’s better stuff than 3M, and there’s quite a few different 3M spray adhesives too. I used their High Strength 90 on the carpet on my door panels and it was fine until the interior temp hit 120 on a hot day and the shit just fell off. I found Plio Bond from another member here and it held up. I’d hate for my headliner to fall off in the summer heat. Oh, and it’s all glue- contact cement, spray adhesive, whatever you want to call it.

On my Tahoe when the headliner had spots at the windshield that started to come down and was driving me crazy, I got a small stapler, opened it up and put a few staples in as close to the windshield as possible. Did this as a temporary fix prior to getting new headliner, but it stayed like that for 2 years. With the visors and console up there and the angle the staples go in, you couldn't see them unless you put your head against the windshield and looked for them. I wouldn't do the driver or passenger door that way as they obviously would be visible.

Took my headliner out myself and took it to a shop to get it redone. Charged me $250 and had to put it back in. Putting it back in was harder than taking it out. But, to be honest, I did place some insulation up before putting the headliner back in. That may have added to the difficulty of reinstalling! Had it done in black but didn’t notice until after installed it that it was two different color blacks! Make sure you check the color before it’s installed if you take it somewhere. (Side note if you remove it, the Suburban and Yukon XL’s have a two piece headliner). But it is possible to take it down and drive it over in the truck!

I bought a variety of sizes from Ace Hardware. Whenever I buy hardware I tend to buy at least a few extras, and usually one bigger and one smaller than the size I need.

Got the drivers door and rear drivers side door covered w Dynamatt extreme. I installed it on the outer panel aswell. It made a big difference.
