I believe the drive cycle is much slower highway speeds than is normally driven these days and steady throttle inputs.
where most people drive 75 mph these days with constant throttle foot.
both basically keep a normal driver out of 4cyl mode while pushing a brick thru the air at 75mph.

oddly in most cars, I usually get a few mpg better on the hyway then the epa rating. especially manual cars. this truck, nope.
Although I don't know about specific testing behaviors, I know that most test behaviors were written into the test by 1978 based on older traffic patterns.
Although they added a few tests that add AC usage and faster top speeds in 2008,
It's a known fact that most people nearly always have a very hard time achieving the CAFE MpG test scores in the real world.
In and of itself, THAT FACT ALONE proves how unrealistic and optimistic CAFE MpG test scores are.

Which brings up the issue of the pathetically unrealistic figures they use on the electric cars. Considering coal is still a major supplier of electricity in this country, they need to rate those Teslas on how many pounds of coal per mile they are consuming, that generated the electricity they are using LOL.

Just like CAFE, things are manipulated for political purposes and not based on reality.

Yes, I believe that is correct. Our 2014 had one on from the factory, as well as a 2010 and a 2012 I did AFM deletes on.

Not sure why an L92 would have it, other than perhaps having some consistency in engine blocks in manufacturing. The purpose of that pressure relief is to protect the solenoids in the AFM VLOM, which can get damaged at something over 60 PSI.

The last AFM I did on an L94, involved installing an L92 OEM camshaft, and a Melling 10296 oil pump with the +10 psi spring that comes installed with it. Threaded stainless steel bolt to block off that relief valve in the oil pan. Plug the towers with steel plugs tapped into them. Cold start, 68 PSI idol. Hot idle 26 PSI. Fully warmed up running down the freeway at 1700 RPM, 47 PSI. And that number goes up with corresponding RPM from there, to about 60 PSI at 4,000 RPM.

On the AFM deletes I've done on L94s, using the same components in all, those figures fluctuate +/-3 PSI, which is probably due to variances in crankshaft/camshaft bearing wear, and lifter bore wear. All were checked out using 5W30 Valvoline full synthetic, with the OEM ACDelco filter.

Highway fuel mileage on all of them increased between one and three miles per gallon, what's really raises the question on if the AFM system actually saved any fuel at all.
My oil pressures are a little bit higher than yours, maybe because I have the Melling high volume oil pump with the +10 psi spring, but I love the increased oil pressure after removing the oil pressure bypass valve.

eh, the electric fuel mileage figure has nothing to do with any of the stuff you think it does. it's basic math. a gal of gas contains this much energy. you measure how far the electric car goes on the same amount of energy and you get the empg. my volt has a lifetime fuel mileage of 125mpg if I remember right.

One gallon of gasoline contains approximately 33.7 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy. This value is used by the EPA to compare the fuel efficiency of gasoline vehicles with electric vehicles, often expressed as miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent (MPGe).


as for the rest, power plants are very efficient even if burning coal. if you added it all up from ground to plant, to your house to charge and did the same from ground, pumped, transported to refinery either by ship, or pipe line, just shuttling crews to the platforms and back is a hassle, don't even talk about the engineering, they only go by helicopter fleet. then blended with all the different rules for each area, transportation to your local port and then another truck to the local station. if it wasn't for the government giving big oil crazy amounts of money, we be at 6$ plus a gal easy. they just know the county runs on fuel and it needs to be cheap for the shark to keep swimming no matter what.


fuel isn't going anywhere because it's just to easy for daily use, but you gotta do some crazy math's for electricity not to be cheaper and cleaner when everything is taken into effect. if not, I'd have a big diesel tank out back running my house off it instead of electricity for 150$ a month. but I can show you the fuel bill for one generator at work running a 12h shift using 50gal for the diesel ones or almost a 100gal for the gas powered ones. and the fuel bill is more per day than my home electric bill and I use tons more kwh than those do.

1gal of petrol may 'contain' approx 33.7 KW-H of 'energy', but isn't the typical gasoline engine less than 40% efficient?
Note that I'm not on electricity/coal's side here, just wondering how much of 1KW-H of electricity actually makes it to the road through the tire?

that's the rub right. that 33kwh would go say 50 miles in a geo and 15 miles in our trucks. mine goes about 35miles per 10kwh. electric motors are much more efficient in turning power into motion then today's standard style internal combustion.

now how they come up with 33kwh, don't even know. they very well could burn it to heat water or something and use that figure. you know, they did mention BTU and then convert that to kwh. so that's probably how, same with how power plants mostly use heated water/steam to turn Gen sets plus you would probably need to know the kwh of a pound of coal? I believe down here in tx it's mostly natural gas fired power stations? I don't know if it's worth trian loads of coal those far down when the refinerys are close ish but I've never looked deep into them. we have a ton of wind out in the flats and off shore too.

that said, you won't see me talking anyone into buying electric stuff. that's on them to decide what fits their lifestyle. I personally like it all but I'm kinda nerdy

It's even more complicated than that. Read an article recently regarding the Tesla.... The energy required to produce the vehicle is almost five times more energy than what it takes to build a Toyota Camry and fuel the Toyota Camry with gasoline for 120,000 miles. The only purpose electric cars really serve is to give people a false sense that they are helping the environment. We're already starting to see signs that they will be dwindling away like the 8-track tapes of the 1970s. More or less just the passing fad, sales are plummeting in production lines are closing so they can go back to building gasoline engines.

I'd be curious to know how the calculated the energy used to produce a vehicle.



I'm not a tesla person but if I was a betting man, they picked the Toyota on for a reason. tesla being all aluminum and aluminum takes an absolute ton of electric to produce and work with. compared to a simple stamped steal.

but that's not really just a tesla thing, the Ford trucks are about 70% aluminum as well.

What I was getting at, was, why are they measuring it in KW-H?
We measure petrol in (either) Miles per Gallon (or volume per distance), pretty much directly.
I get that a battery is not the same as a fuel tank in terms of 'volume', but functionally there is a commonality.

If it takes (say) 1 gallon of petrol to go 10 miles (which costs $3.something per gallon),
why not compare whatever unit of electricity it takes to go 10 miles (which costs less, I assume?).

They don't want to show the real figures. The dollar amount in coal, the cost to excavate it and transport it, the cost of the power generation facility and transmitting the power, and then the cost of the charger at home.... You're up to the equivalent of about $12 per gallon of gas. Of course if you could isolate that to hydroelectric power the cost comes way down. Even natural gas. But Coal is still a major source of electricity in this country.

The highway EPA figure for our 2014 Escalade AWD was 18 MPG. It never even got close to that when the AFM was active, even when new. Following the delete we surpassed it easily.

Waiting on the used oil analysis report to arrive.
Here's the latest UOA report, about 2 qts VPB "Restore" mixed w/4 qts M1.

Blackstone nailed it :)

Yes, I had the intake, valley cover, valve covers, timing cover, and oil pan off 1000 miles into this oci.
Power/mpg are normal, 15+ mpg locally and 18+ hwy.
Oil consumption is 1/4 qt/5000 miles
1oz in the catch can/5k miles
Crud/gunk in the oil filter and in the bottom of the pan again since running a mix of VPB "Restore" starting 2 OCIs ago, Sept 2023 and10k miles.

A little concerning to me are these slightly high metals:
Chromium this oci = 4, last time 2
FE this oci = 80, last time = 80
PB this oci = 20, last time = 14
Cu this oci = 18, last time = 14, although BS shows universal avg for the engine to be 19?

Sept 2023, two oil changes ago, I started running 1 qt of VPB "Restore" with 5 qts M1. I also removed the oil cooler, engine oil bypass oil filter setup, and the extra 4 qt oil sump, all of which I had installed in 2021, and went back to stock. I also stopped running a larger full flow oil filter with a higher bypass psi (22) rating, and started running the shorter oil filter # the that parts manuals call for with its lower bypass psi (15).

I underlined in RED in the comments area some important points.

I changed the oil to 3 qts VPB "restore" and 3 qts M1 and went back to the larger oil filter w/22 psi bypass rating.

The chromium and iron (fe) are definitely interesting. Off the top of my head, the chromium.... Do you think that could be from chromoly rings? Valve stems? Needle bearings in the trunions if you still have the OEM ones? A piston pin maybe?
