Ticking Sound

Should I be concerned with the ticking sound? Any guesses what it's from?

BTW it's only noticeable in the driver side wheel well.

Not on the short drive to Walmart and back. I haven’t driven it since. I’ll check today at work.

Sounds like the lifter isn't rolling on the cam very well

That ain't right. Sounds like it's at the frequency of cam rotation so likely valvetrain related. Other possibilities: Loose rocker arm, broken valve spring, intermittently sticking AFM lifter. I'd pop the valve cover on that side and have a looksee. How many miles?

I would rev the engine a little bit and record it, see how the sound changes with RPM. My engine would make strange lifter like sounds occasionally for a year or so before I had significant lifter failure and I think that is what is happening to you. You might be able to get it to stop temporarily and give you some time to start preparing before the problem becomes serious. My lifter rattle would occasionally happen starting at 170,000 miles and eventually had a large lifter problem at 179,000 miles.

LS engine lifter tick is inherent in these engines. Mine goes away after 20-30 seconds

What has been said but do not disregard the possibility of an exhaust leak from a broken manifold stud. Check all studs for broken/missing.

2012 YXL. Still have any coverage on the 3yr / 50K service contract?

1st check for exhaust gasket leaks. Have it checked ASAP if you can have coverage on the S/C.

Is the AFM turned off with a module yet?

The contract expired, and I had @BlackBearPerf tune it and turn off AFM.

Years ago I had a Suburban that developed a ticking noise. Noise went away when I replaced the spark plugs and wires.

If it comes and goes, that could be valvetrain sludge, rotated lifter, or a loose rocker... Maybe even a broken valve spring that made its way into the valve cover area.

I would start just by doing the easy stuff, pull the valve covers off, and give her a good inspection.

@itsbo1313 My lifter sound would come and go, sometimes it gets stuck in the wrong position and sometimes it can sort itself out. I would say that you are on borrowed time, it might last 1 week or 1 more year. Start making a plan for when it happens.

I had that noticably in my dads 07 flex 4x4 and it went away immediately after i put new spark plugs and wires in... But now i am wondering if it is the lifters... Please keep us posted on what direction you take and what comes of it ie (what you find out) as this area is my next one after i get the radiator and all its close buddies replaced.

Ditto.... Did it ever come back or did you have to do something about the exhaust or lifters later by chance?
