Much easier than fussing with a smoke machine (if you even have one) and works every time. I've used it to locate exhaust manifold and downpipe leaks numerous times.
Did a little more troubleshooting today and pulled the passenger side valve cover. It's the first time it's been off and the top of the head looked very clean. Fortunately there was no play on any of the lifters. I'll pull the drivers side cover in the next day or two. If both sides check out, I'll drain off some oil to send in for an analysis. I haven't been able to pick anything up with a stethoscope despite hearing the noise while driving.
I also swapped the alternator that I installed two months ago and put my old GM DR44 back in. That eliminated the supercharger whine noise so the new unit must have a faulty voltage regulator. I noticed it was charging at 15+amps.
