Hi.
I have a 2004 Tahoe with 125000miles on it and I kinda feel that the steering box is getting bad. I have tried to tighten up the box but I don’t feel it’s getting any better. I’m sure I have tightened the allen screw one full round. So I guess it’s time to change it out.
I have an steering box laying in my garage that’s of an 2005 Tahoe with 65000miles on it. So I plan was to put that one in. So I put the box on the work bench to check it. When I try to move the pitman arm from side to side, I can here and feel a clunking noise.
Is this how it should be or is this box going bad also?
I tried uploading a small film but could not figure out how.

Helge, Usually there is enough resistance in the box that you cannot feel wear by hand. figure a way to fasten a long bar to it with box in vise or bolted to bench. Try Google for a unit repair manual- Torque wrench= long bar.
