There was a bar at the end of this shopping center that I used to rescue an uncle from! LOL

Forget the Porsche, check out that '77 Toyota Corolla wagon! Took my road test in our '80 and then nearly died in it on A1A in front of the Yankee Clipper. An uncle cut off the back half and welded in a new one and made one good car out of two which his daughter drove for a few years.

Too bad about that pilot.

That was heading east after leaving Lowe’s. Powerline and east on Oakland Park Blvd.

There is a Jim Threlkel florist that looks like it has been there for ages.

Wasn’t even interested in the Cayenne. I saw that wagon which was in Cordova by the Quarterdeck. Dine a dozen like Escalades and Mercedes down here.

Should see the massive Ferrari and Maserati dealer expanding on US1 north of Commercial. See both all the time. So much moolah happening here.

It would be nice to get down there again and cruise around and reminisce. But where to eat? I miss the Whale's Rib. There was a restaurant on the New River that used to give boat rides at night that we used to take my grandmother to on weekends, can't remember the name. Then of course, the Jungle Queen Cruise, we've taken the oldest with my grandmother but I don't think my other two girls were even born yet. Do you remember The Golden Spike, Le Dome or the Kapok Tree Inn? At Seabreeze and A1A was a delightful little restaurant in the 1990s that had lots of outdoor seating on these covered tables and benches that swung, don't remember that one's name either anymore. Before that it was a gas station that had been there since the 1950s or 60s.

All the aforementioned places I do not recognize. Some of my born here friends would likely know them.

So much gentrification and $$$ being poured in on and around the beaches. Huge condo units. Some starting in the $500k -$3M range.

Mom and pop motels are being bought up and ripped down. Lauderdale by the Sea is holding on but not for long.

An empty plot on the beach just south of Bonnett House where the Natchez Apts were has sat there for years and is going for $25M.

City wants parking. New garage by Las Olas bridge. Elbo Room still stands at 80 years and looks like it too.

Drive by it every day.

That place in the corner was called Oasis. Bokampers bought it as they have a place on ICW at Oakland Park bridge.

It just opened and it looks very nice on that corner. 2 levels and all open or closed depending on weather.

Solid Gold is now a Bahama Breeze and Pure Platinun was just flattened.

Even down on Flagler just north of Broward it is all apts and coming along. Macguires on the Hill Irish pub is gone and being torn down.

I could go on and on and places you grew up with are mostly gone. Some still around though. Lots of coffee shops, smoothie stops and even a few breweries have popped up around town.

And Wilton Manors has lots of $$ injected and is slowly pushing out the rough parts towards the tracks.

This got me thinking about Mr. Gumps out west and the Lum's and the huge Nathan's Hot Dogs on US1 and Sunrise which is also where my father's real estate company had been since the 1950s until he moved it to Oakland Park Blvd. I think it is the Italian Restaurant there now. Fudrucker's was over there too at one time. Just to the east, right before the bridge was an old school pharmacy with a counter and my parents would buy me gumball ice cream and while they sat inside, my sister and I would chase the blue crabs around the parking lot while our ice cream melted! And of course, I could not resist the water and had to walk over to the sea wall. We lived just a few blocks away at the time, 1976.

Good to hear that Pure Platinum is gone. Another uncle installed the lights and sound in that place when it was built.

There's always been big money along the coast, it ebbs and flows but keeps getting bigger! I was googling around and see that most of the restaurants on the ICW near Oakland and Commercial are gone, the original ones anyway.

It was a different place back then, a different country. Of course, my ancestors and theirs said the same thing!

You have the early days history which I am missing except when locals share. Been passing through here since late 90s but moved full time in mid 00s.

Sunrise/US 1 is small shops and massive Audi, Cadillac, Chevy and Ford dealers.

Whole Foods, Best Buy, Dicks and all small shops. Galleria is still going with PF Chang’s, Capital Grille, Seasons 52 and Blue Martini.

Sunrise west of the curve is still old but slowly getting upgraded.

The US1 run from 84 up north into Pompano and Lighthouse Point is of course being built.

Denny’s at 17th and US1 is now an WF being built.

17th is all done. Shops turn over with some staples.

Here’s an interesting one.

Took the boys swimming with my friend who was born and raised here and his dad has the house on Las Olas with the Seminole artifacts and pictures.

He grew up with the former mayors sister and after Irma his dad had no power for 20 days. Dad is 93. Son called mayor, crews from Palm Beach on the scene in 4 hrs and power restored.

Old boy networks and connections. He shared that story saying that current mayor and council are all transplants. He fears last generation of actual locals may be moving on so the actual born ties to FLL and holding on to the past like your accounts and the nostalgic reasons could be gone with decisions moving forward.

Times marches on...

I moved to Boynton Beach in '94 and still worked down there until 2000. Still have two uncles in your neck of the woods but unfortunately we're no longer close, or even speaking! My maternal grand parents and an uncle are entombed in the Forest Lawn pyramid you see off I-595 and my paternal grand parents are buried just to the east in Lauderdale Memorial Park as are my great-grand parents.

Are you referring to Mayor Jim Naugle and his kin? I remember little of *** but did meet E. Clay Shaw.

Oh, yeah, on Sunrise/US1 and Flagler was King Oldsmobile. Huge dealership that we bought cars from. Eleven years after buying an Oldsmobile I cashed in the "free towing" card that you got when buying a new car with them! Vrchota Towing, still remember the name because it was so unusual. Course, that's right next to Holiday Park which we talked about before.

One of those end houses on Las Olas and Fiesta Way, our unit had a sailboat docked there and we fixed her up and took the boat from there, out Port Everglades and up the coast under sail. We were supposed to go south but some WW2 mines had broken loose and washed up on shore again. When my dad was a teenager, his sailboat sank in the inlet and he almost drowned being caught in the rigging.

We used to play and later launch boats from George English Park. There was a cool maze there at one time.

Well, I've gone way off topic again! I hooked up a dash cam to my truck so I stand a better chance than before to contribute to this thread soon!

Oh, one last thing. There used to be a 7-11 at Breakers Ave and 9th and we would go there as a pit stop to get drinks and use the bathroom and park on the dead-end next to the store. There were dumpsters there and wild monkeys would always be there rummaging around.
