Odd sounding question (to me)

I bought an ‘05 tahoe XL SLT (with autoride) yesterday from a personal seller.

having driven it for a little while (brining it home), I noticed something I hope you can help me solve.

when I first get going (low speeds), I heard a buzzing kind of sound coming from the rear (maybe passenger wheel well?). At first, I was looking around for someone using a weed whip near the road...until I realized it was my truck.

Is this something with the autoride sysmtem possibly? There is a message on the dash “service ride control”.

any thoughts?

the vehicle has 214k miles on it.

If your Tahoe has Auto level, there is an air compressor that pumps up or deflates air bladders on your rear shocks to keep the vehicle level. That might be what you are hearing. Maybe post a picture of your RPO sticker that is inside your glove box and we can see what you have. ItS a sticker with a bunch of 3-digit codes.

Welcome to the forum from Oregon. @wjburken beat me to it. I was also going to say air compressor with a possible noisy leak.


We recommend that you put all your rig(s) info in your signature so we all don’t have to guess at year, make, model, engine size, trans, rear axle locker…….etc. While you may have posted pertinent info in your first post, you may forget to do it again and the info is needed by us anyway. Makes it way easier on all members that attempt to help, to have that info right up front. It is also recommended that you take a pic of your RPO codes, on the inside cover of the glove box, and post that image in your signature. All this info will greatly help those that will try to help with a problem.


If there is any other info, like upgrades, mods or recent mechanical/maintenance work done, that would be helpful in any post as well. Too many times a question is asked by the poster and after about 10 responses we find out that the poster has done recent work to attempt to fix the problem or work that was done that SEEMS not related to the problem.

Thanks! Sorry for the delayed reply, I need to figure out why I'm not getting notifications.

So I think I uncovered what the issue for this is. There is a heat shield over the exhaust that seems to have gotten loose and vibrates from time to time. My father-in-law has a Yukon and dealt with the same issue. He used stainless steel ties on it and was able to fix it.

The age of the vehicle and where it is driven plays in to when a shield will break loose. Rusted till it breaks in the rust belt states. That type of noise, have heard many times, can drive a person nuts.
