Anyone use a good non marring lug nut socket? I don’t believe the ones I’ve researched will handle the 140 ft lbs for our trucks.

Guess I’ve always used a standard deep well impact socket with my torque wrench and never had an issue.

I use a set that has a plastic coating over the outside.

Came as a set of 3 reversible sockets, so 6 sizes, a short 1/2" extension, and a case. Might be from Harbor Freight. I've had it for like 15 years.

To understand correctly, is the non marring feature supposed to be on the inside of the socket to keep from doing damage to the outside of the lug nut?

Yes...to protect painted wheel nuts. I first saw them in use with AN fittings.

I can see where the outer plastic coating will protect the wheel stud hole well but the outer portion of the lug nut would not be protected.

I may just try this, and hope that it won’t crack at 140 ft lbs. It protects both the wheel and lug nut. I’m planning on new wheels and black lug nuts, so don’t want to damage the lug nuts like I have in the past on other black wheels lug nuts I’ve owned.

For the price and the attempt to protect the way you want, I say it is worth the shot at that price. Please let us know if it works ok, or at least me. I have a 2005 Z71 and am thinking about keeping my spider web wheels and doing a matte black coating on them with with black lug nuts and matte black center caps.

A few drops of engine oil in the socket on each lug.

I saw that on the reviews. People were saying not to use impact because they were not strong enough and were breaking. The second link, ARES sockets say they are approved for impact use. Plus, read the reviews and the asked questions. Any company can advertise one thing but customer feedback tells it all.

The other ridiculously long link is the one for the ARES sockets.

Thanks! I’ll check all those out. I’m afraid at 140 ft lbs that this could happen...

I’ll do more research on adding oil to the socket. In fact...I think I may get one extra black lug nut and try that.

Ive heard of people using a slightly larger socket and using electrical tape in it.

Personally I never use an impact on lug nuts (only a drill to spin them on till snug) , so maybe it’ll be fine for my application.
