So i spent some time trying to figure out the correct type of refrigerant oil.
Early on i found that it was "Pag 150".
So i added like a 1/2oz to my system while trying to diagnose the ac compressor noise.
No change so I left it there.

Well, here i am now looking to replace more of that oil.
Turns out it's this stuff: AC Delco PN 10-5026/88901445
Doing some research, that appears to be Pag 46...

so i have a tube of that AC delco stuff on order.
And i have a bottle of generic on hand.

Next, remove drier and compressor and drain to see the amount they contain.
And then the oil balance fun begins.

And I'm still waiting on the freaking machine shop.
I'll bug them tomorrow if i don't hear anything today.
:yuno:

And it's supposed to be nice and warm this weekend, so i'm thinking it's time to break out the degreaser, rifle bore brush, and a hose and clean that block really well.
Finish up with some Air to dry, and WD 40 to prevent rusting.

And the main oil passage ways appear to be .50 cal.
If anyone was wondering.

and stealing an idea from @iamdub
i ordered these: 6 Samarium Cobalt Magnets 1/4 x 1 inch Cylinder SmCo30 | eBay
I'm going to make a non magnetic oil drain plug magnetic!

Not as powerful as the Neodymium type, but SmCo is a bit more "stable" long term.
Can handle something like 500 degrees F.
I'm more concerned with the 250 f range, but it should last.

I didn't even research the effect of temperature, nor have I ever heard of SmCo. I just searched for Neodymium cuz that's all I know that makes me tingle.

...Just did a little researching. I should keep my engine oil temp below 212°. Dammit.

I think its more like 170, but the magnet having a plug and the pan as a heatsink should help.
Just test the magnet every oil change.

And smco magnets are expensive and weaker than the N type, not all that common.

And i don't believe that the factory magnet is a smco type.
But those have a service life, like the round magnet in the trans pan.

Also, i have a bunch of magnets in my transmission pan.
Went overboard, but magnets are fantastic filters for metal bits.
:D

Well i called the machine shop this morning.
Turns out his wife passed away last Saturday.
Poor guy started tearing up on the phone.

So what else can i say but take your time.

:okay2:

On a brighter note, i got the new drier and ac compressor installed.
Vaccumed the system and oil drained out of the old stuff.
Little over 100ml.
Think that works out to be right around 3.5oz.

New compressor has 1.5oz...

Removed oil looked ok, a little dark.

Should be ok to run as is.
Tempted to pull the condenser and flush, but that looks like the bumper needs to be removed.

I always wanted to see what these looked like inside, so i took apart my old ac compressor.

each piston is like a ******** best friend, double sided.

so 10 cylinders technically.

I also confirmed that all of the oil has been removed and measured by doing this.

Going through it real quick, it looks in good condition.
the clutch looked like ass, i don't think it had much left.

Reason for changing this was for mileage, and the weird high pitched squealing i heard when it was running.

I would like to try my hand at rebuilding one of those someday
