I was riding with a friend yesterday and we got rear-ended by a distracted (texting) driver. Fortunately everyone is okay, and there is only minor damage to his truck, but it made me want to finally pull the trigger on a mod I've been considering for awhile - a brake flasher module in the 3rd brake light. Something like the one linked below, as an added defense against getting rear-ended.

The thing is, I have no idea what kind to get - from what I've been reading, incandescent and LED lights require different voltage modules. Has anyone ever successfully installed one of these? Does anyone know if NNBS has a LED 3rd brake light, or if it's incandescent? All my brake lights are stock. How difficult is the wiring? Thanks in advance.

@kbuskill did a similar mod, hopefully he'll chime in.

The 3rd brake light or CHMSL (center high mount stop lamp) is LED on these trucks.

The module you linked to should work fine for what you are wanting to do.

It's a very simple install... power and ground IN from your 3rd brake light wiring... power and ground OUT to the 3rd brake light.

Just remove the 3rd brake light and spoiler from your back glass. Two 10mm nuts and three T25 torch screws.

Then unplug the 2 pin connector from the 3rd brake light and then cut the plug off of the wires leaving enough room to be able to attach the wiring from the strobing module.

Hook the input side of the module to the trucks side of the wires you cut. Red wire on module = LT Blue on truck... Black on module = Black on truck.

Then hook the output side of module to the plug you cut off in the same manner as described above.

I prefer to solder and heat shrink everything but at the very least get some good heat shrink butt connectors that will seal up... or get some marine grade heat shrink with adhesive inside to go over the butt connectors.

Here is another good solution that is much easier to install....

Easy as changing out your bulbs.

I "may" have went a bit overboard with mine but getting rear ended by a semi while on your motorcycle will definitely make you want to take all the precautions you can.

Mine is quite a bit more modified than what I explained above but I will post it just to give you an idea.

You will only need 2 bulbs because only your upper bulbs are brake lights from the factory.
