Idle relearn after Throttle Body Removal and Cleaning

Im struggling with the decision of cleaning the throttle body given that I read somewhere that if you pull the throttle body and move the throttle plate while cleaning it that you must perform a idle relearn which requires a $1,000 plus scanner that has relearn capabilities.

I have never had to perform this on a GM vehicle in the past when I cleaned the throttle body, just pull the positive battery cable and after a 1/2 hour the PCM resets and all was well.

Anyone have the definitive answer? Do you have to actually move the throttle plate in order to need to perform the idle relearn, of is it not necessary at all?

Didn't get any replies, Couldn't wait , had to buy a bidirectional scanner

Didn't see this as we were racing. I'd heard of both ways but when my daughter and I did ours, I ignorantly moved the throttle plate by hand to squirt behind it and did not have to do anything. No relearn, no funny idle. A Tech-2 is about 1/2 that but you can probably work on a lot more than just old GM cars with that one! Do post a review for the fellas when you can.

Turn key on , put brick on pedal, blast TB with carb cleaner.

I have cleaned them on both nbs and nnbs numerous times, moved the plate to get it all clean inside and out, never had to relearn anything, I even changed my nnbs to a LS7 throttle body it was plug-n-play 100% and I have cleaned that one also. However some people do run into issue's for some reason.......

There is a relearn procedure. Iirc it’s something like start truck, do not touch gas pedal, idle for 5 min, shut it off, do same like 3 more times and it should be fine. Something like that, ive posted it a few times. If not I’ve heard it takes a few miles for it to settle in..but will get there. I did mine and grabbed everything, moved every, sprayed everthing, didnt give it a second thought, did the idle relearn procedure and had no problems. Eventually, no matter what, the truck will learn and right itself

I've cleaned many a throttle body over the yrs with the key off and never had to do a relearn?

I had to do relearn after cleaning my air filter ..

happened on my GM car

it cleared up and ran better though


it's one of those WTF moments. it was a 03 drive by wire
