you can buy hi flow cats off ebay for 50 ish a pop, have the old cats cut out, and weld in the new ones. no need to replace the whole Y pipe.

Take it to a muffler shop you can have a good replacement installed and out the door for $160ish, this guy wants to to do your whole exhaust that's not necessary unless it's a rust bucket

I had my cat welded on for about $180 by a local exhaust shop. Your mechanic is quoting for a bolt on system. Check out an exhaust shop.

As stated the cats are welded on not bolted. The guy is way off. Replace them soon so some of what’s broken off doesn’t block your exhaust or land in your resonator or muffler.

Ok so just got the call from shop I dropped the truck off to and the guy said he’s 100 percent certain it’s a bad cat.

What are my options here? He said about 800 to replace the whole h pipe with the 2 catalytic converters which I thought was way high.

I read that it’s not illegal to remove a non functioning cat. I read that only if you remove a fully functional cat that it’s illegal. In my state we don’t have inspection

The guy did tell me that gas mileage and performance will suffer if we straight pipe it. Thoughts?

also now that we know it’s a bad cat, is it ok to drive like that till I get it fixed? I’m assuming it is ok

Not sure where the guy is coming up with 800 but so far from a quick search I found this http://vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eB...ategory=33629&pm=1&ds=0&t=1559682870000&ver=0

Not sure if that is cheap quality but it shouldn’t be anymore than a 100.00 to install I’m guessing as it’s a direct bolt on.

I think I would get a couple more shops to diagnose it.

Thanks for the help everyone,

Do you know what each of these cats are worth? I work in Detroit so have a bunch of different scrapyards and junkyards around here. Just quickly from talking to one guy he said he’d give me $50.00 a piece. He’s in the business of buying used car parts from junkyards so my guess is I’d be selling much under market?

This is a video from this morning. Took it to the exhaust shop this afternoon, when they removed the cat it confirmed that the honeycomb came loose and was causing the rattle. Problem fixed now, no more noise. I appreciate everyone’s help. Thought it was crazy two shops diagnosed it as a bad engine. Posting this video to help anyone else out.

I would not buy those you will get p0420 with them it's not certified for use on the Tahoe (independently tested)

put in your year , model and engine size
AND you can buy the correct Certified after market converter..

you got burned badly it should have cost 40$ to weld it on

Not including the price of the part though

180 parts and labor. OEM cats are not cheap. You can buy the high flow aftermarket units for less but those will likely throw an SES code.

fair price if it includes a "working part"

hope you got the old one back to sell as scrap that is worth 150 to 300$

lol, well now you know what repair shops to NOT go to in the future, glad you got it fixed
No ******* kidding.

How do you diagnose a bad cat as a bad engine? Yeesh. I could almost understand thinking it at first pass if it were the flywheel, but that's something that would be caught upon removing the flywheel bolts, before the thing even comes out of the car.

Tell ya what though, that would have made for a very very interesting conversation after dropping a couple stacks on an engine.

Happy you got her fixed without a new engine. Nice to know that the sounds these failing cats make can vary. Always a good place to start when strange noises are heard.
