I just bought a 2016 Tahoe. The used car dealer that I got it from only had one key for it, but gave me a second key from a 2015 Tahoe. They said that I could re-program it to work with my vehicle, but they didn't know how to do it. (Of course the emergency key would have to be changed).
I looked in the internet and found instructions for programming a NEW key fob, but multiple attempts did not work. I tried a new battery in the fob, as well. I put the fob in the slot in the console and got the message that the fob was not found. I saw one article that gave a specific circuit board number for a fob that would work on the 2016 model, but my working fob didn't have that number.
I finally bought a new key from a local locksmith (my neighbor), he programmed it, and it works fine. He commented that when trying to switch a fob from one vehicle to another, it was rather hit or miss. Sometimes it works. sometimes it doesn't.
Any thoughts?
On another related note, I would like to be able to carry a spare key & fob on the vehicle. I was thinking that you could hide it in a weatherproof container and remove the battery and store it outside the fob so you could lock the doors. Has anyone done anything like this?
