Got the dreaded slow tank fill

This is some BS!!! Got the slow tank fill, pump cuts off after .5 gallon or so. Ok, so I change everything, canister, valve and solenoid. Blew the line out....same crap! Take to a shop right down the road and they pull all of the lines and clean them out....they were full of the pellets. Shop says if that doesn't work, most likely will have to change the tank as there is a non-servicable "check valve" that cannot be reached to clean that is probably clogged too. Well, none of that has worked, so now what? Does the tank really need to be changed?

I didn't realize that's a known issue. Might be happening with our Suburban. 1st time it shut off every ~5 gal was when it was in the negatives so I chalked it up to the cold. Then last week I got gas and didn't realize until I had driven away the pump had clicked off after only half a tank or so.

It's pretty crappy if you have to replace the fuel tank to fix this. If you're going with that shop I hope you trust them because that's something they could easily recommend to get a sale.

Do you go to different stations or always the same one? If same one, it could be just the stations pumps.

When we did mine we disconnected the lines from the canister and pressurized the tank by wrapping a rag around the blow gun and sticking it into the filler neck where the fuel cap goes.

The rag helps seal the air in the tank. Just be careful not to over inflate the tank as it is plastic and you can actually watch it expand as you do this.

It blew out a lot of pellets from the lines. We also disconnected the purge valve up by the intake manifold and blew air back towards the canister.

I would certainly give that a try before condemning the tank.

It's been two different stations with the same "chain" of stores, so could be the same style of pump at each station. May try a different station. I just know that it's a real PITA!!!

Well, if you're topping off your tank, STOP now!! That is the main cause of this.

Do these pellets just get in the vent lines? Can they get in th fuel line itself? If not, just the vent lines are the ones that need to be cleared. Think I'm gonna try and tackle it this weekend. Still not 100% confident in that shop I took it to.

Just the vent lines. There is no way for them to get into the fuel feed line.

When I had this happen on my Ram I just replaced with a junk yard tank. I used www.car-part.com to source. I actually had to replace again about a year later as that tank had the same issue. The second replacement has been going strong for about 5 years now. I sold it to a friend to get my Yukon XL.

Didn’t know that. But makes sense. Larger suv = likely more traveling

I only have experience with Tahoe’s and pick ups over the years. My vans the only one that came with the larger tank

Also going to have to monitor this as I didn’t know it was “a thing”.

2009 Tahoe happens pretty frequently. 2010 Suburban 2500 alternates between that and spitting up instead auto stopping when the tank gets to full.

Ok, so NOTHING I have tried has worked. Next thing will be to unplug the vent tubes and pressurize the tank to see if that works. If not, then I guess I will be buying a new tank. Or should I buy a used tank? My only concern with a used tank is that I could be getting right back into the same spot I'm in now.

Found a used tank locally, guy wants $25 for it. Think I may try that. He bought Tahoe from an auction and doesn't know anything about it. Probably just take the gamble and try it.

I'm not aware of any check valves in the tank. That is not to say there isn't one, I just have never heard of it or seen one.

Didn't know this was a thing. My 07 Tahoe does this, but only here in California with their stupid vapor return nozzles, and only at certain stations. Outside of CA, no problems.

Uh,.... Where are the vent tubes?? I had my '05 Yukon XL vent system re-done completely because of this problem, but sometimes it still does it..... ( I was at a Shell station last week and it filled up fine)

( So, the filling stops..... sometimes ..... ( Maybe it is the specific station??)

Beats me....
