I have a mystery clunk. 2013 suburban everything is new in the front end basically minus lower control arms and CV axles. I have a clunk I can feel in the steering wheel but only on the driver side.

I had someone turn the wheel in drive and reverse with the foot on the break and I heard a slight clicking while the wheel was being turned and thought maybe the clink is coming from the cv axle?

Time to get the front end up in the air and have a look underneath.

Check the upper and lower ball joints. No more than .5mm of play.

Check the tie rod boots. No more than 1mm of play.

Check the sway bar end links for missing rubber.

Check the CV axles for torn boots and grease slinging.

Check for hub play by moving the tire.

Push up and move the front differential to see if the brackets need replacing.

Same for the rack and pinion bushings.

Check your driver's side engine mount. Look for evidence of leaks and breaks. These are fluid filled mounts that rot and leak over time.

The latter is the most popular source for front end clunking when the truck is shifted into gear, either forward or reverse.

Good EASY one to check @swathdiver mentioned above, that gave me the same symptoms, the steering rack bushing.
The donut bushing around one end of the rack.
Slide under there, grab the rack near the bushing, and see if there's any movement.

I had a front end clunk. Easily seen when moving slowly and applying the brake while our mechanic stood along side and watched. He saw the movement immediately. Control arm bushings were the culprit.
