Engine oil pressure

So something weird happened to me today. I got in my truck after it had been sitting for 2 days. I started it up and noticed engine oil pressure was extremely high. Around 70 psi. I thought it was kinda odd since have never seen that before on startup. As the truck warmed up it never went below 60 even at idle. The slightest touch of the gas would make it go back to 70. So after 30 min of driving I was back home with no change. A few hours later I went back out and startup pressure was 40 and hovered around there when driving normally. At idle it was 20-30 psi. In the past the only time I have seen the pressure get up to 70 was when I would floor it off a stop light.

Anyone have any ideas what might have caused the pressure to run high on that run cycle?

Before I get started to try and see what is going on, does every 2015-2020 Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade have the exact same engine options and so therefore all are the same carbon copy of each other in the engine compartment and no need to worry about what is in this rig?

2020 RST models have the 6.2 as a option but otherwise they are pretty much the same.

I think what @PNW VietVet was trying to get at is when folks post a question, it is hard to know how to answer sometimes unless the person who posts the question shares some information about their vehicle like year, motor size, mileage, etc. It is also helpful to know what work, if any, has been done to either try and resolve the issue or anything else prior to the issue presenting itself as that can help point to a possible culprit.

These things have a variable-displacement oil pump. Perhaps it was stuck in the max volume mode?

That's why I said, "if", because it is just an old man's way of getting a point across. Some mebers may say it is rude but skin can be thin sometimes. Thanks for responding back. I always want to help but after working the the auto repair business over 35 years, I always wanted vehicle info. I never had a customer come in and say "here's my keys and here's my problems" and then say, "You figure out which car on your lot is mine".


We recommend, except @Galante, that you put all your rig(s) info in your signature so we all don’t have to guess at year, make, model, engine size, trans, rear axle locker…….etc. While you may have posted pertinent info in your first post, you may forget to do it again and the info is needed by us anyway. Makes it way easier on all members that attempt to help, to have that info right up front. It is also recommended that you take a pic of your RPO codes, on the inside cover of the glove box, and post that image in your signature. All this info will greatly help those that will try to help with a problem.


If there is any other info, like upgrades, mods or recent mechanical/maintenance work done, that would be helpful in any post as well. Too many times a question is asked by the poster and after about 10 responses we find out that the poster has done recent work to attempt to fix the problem or work that was done that SEEMS not related to the problem.

To be clear, RON recommends you put a pic of your RPO code list in your sig. There hasn’t been any consensus from the rest of us so I’m not sure why he has decided to speak for the group. I certainly don’t recommend it and if you notice, none of the regulars here have adopted this. Pertinent vehicle info can be included in your sig, or in any post where you’re asking for help. Just putting that out there so there’s no misconceptions.

My recommendation of the RPO code pic is for info only. If you notice, my signature originally only had the pertinent RPO codes in it but the pic is only a recommendation. It is not a "must do". I never said that in any way and you know that. I say "we recommend" instead of "I recommend" because I have had many members tell me it is a good idea and I felt that I should change to the "we" part. I am not demanding anything at all. @Rocket Man, you don't need to clarify things that I say. If you don't like it then tell me in a message and we can talk but to throw shade at me, so to speak, is just your way of a dig. You can't help yourself and I know that. But I also don't care either. Keep our disagreements to just us and stop airing dirty laundry.

On my 2016 5.3 Tahoe the oil pressure always stays between 38-41. Never up to 70.

Weird though, because usually it pegs at 80 and doesn't move. No way to know but change it, really. It's <$30 and 30 minutes, I suppose.

I’ll see if it does it again. If so I’ll change it. It’s cheap. Where is it located? I haven’t really looked for it. I watched some YouTube videos on older vehicles but can’t seem to find any for new gens.
