I'm about to pull the trigger and spent 15 minutes today looking at a set of aluminum (with silver inserts) and silver (with black inserts) side by side at the dealership. I couldn't tell the difference sans the actual insert.

Can anyone shed some light?

Aluminum is a lot to keep up with since you have to polish it on a regular basis. The silver finish has a clear coat over it, so it basically wipes clean. The only benefit to the aluminum (in my opinion), is that it shines like chrome when it's clean and polished.

The aluminum is clear coated so you shouldn't have to polish any of it.
