Center console rebuild

I don’t currently have to time or the money to build a new center console for my ‘01 Yukon Denali, but I thought I should ask if anyone else has done this and what tips they have. I was planning on building it out of wood, and readjusting the placement of the radio and ac controls and such to make room for a screen of some sort.
