GM,

I have a 2017 Yukon XL, 5.3L with 127,000

It needs a new transmission and I was quoted $5100 to put in a remanufactured one.

Does anyone have thoughts about the likelihood of this truck making it to 200k without any major expenses? I don’t want to pay $5k now and then have to pay another 5 next year for some known engine/electrical troubles.

This truck has been pretty disappointing over the years.

Injectors failed at 60k
AC (evaporator and expansion valve failure) at 88k
AC (condenser) at 110k
Transmission control valve spacer plate at 115k

It’s got some electrical things now like driver door lock switch isn’t working, the fuse keeps popping on the console ac/dc plug. And the AC was struggling to cool at the end of summer- so likely more issues there.

I obviously don’t want to buy a new car but I also don’t want to keep this one and continue throwing money into this truck.

Any experience with this model and what could be coming for me would be helpful.

Thanks

My tranny failed at 170k on my 2015 Tahoe LTZ. I traded it in at that point.

You have less miles than I did yours is a coin flip.

It seems to me that you are at that decision point to keep or acquire. You know what you have with your current truck, and obviously you need to put some money into is to get it back into good shape with any issues. Perhaps $5000 for the transmission and maybe another $5000 to get rid of all the other current issues.

So, if you decide to acquire, you won't need to spend the $10,000 on your current truck, but since you won't be purchasing new, you will inherit the status of all previous maintenance activities on the acquired truck, in addition to the purchase price itself.

Better the Devil that you know? That is your decision point. And, to some extent, it is really a crap shoot. But, once you decide, move forward, and don't look back.

Son was in a similar situation recently. He got a rebuilt transmission at an independent shop and they reprogrammed the trans. and engine controllers to get rid of the AFM and sloppy transmission operation. He did have some lifter noise before this and did a Seafoam procedure that seemed to really help this and now after an added 20k miles all is well. (knock on wood)

vehicles need maintenance, that being said the injectors and ac condenser failing are well known defects which should have been covered under warranty, unless it happened recently.
anything else is a gamble, $5k is cheaper than another car loan
