I just installed a UPR catch can in my 2019 Escalade ESV. It hisses, but only on application of throttle. At idle it's silent. Also, it's installed correctly, as I JUST installed it, went for a 40 mile drive, checked it, and there is already like 1ML dirty oil in the can.

Are catch cans hissing normal?

It’s a common complaint. I had a j&l, I think they did a name change, and they allude to that in one of their videos.

Interesting. I don't believe that my JLT (now called J&L) catch can makes a hiss, but my truck is loud anyway, so I may simply not be hearing it.

I log my oil catch can capture every time that I empty the catch can, and I average about 1 fl. oz. per 1000 miles.

I saw this on Lonestar Hawaiian’s YouTube channel:
Yep, I watched that video first. My issue is not the same. I have no hissing at idle, only at light throttle. It sounds like a dry bearing. Manipulating the hoses makes no difference.

I was also able to mitigate the noise ever so slightly by tightening the can (the bottom part) more.

With the amount of oil it's pulling, I'm just going to live with it until I can get a pair of longer hoses and a bracket to mount it somewhere near the aux battery area.

I installed a UPR on my 2017 Yukon XL(L83) about a month ago after doing my delete and cam. I noticed a similar noise on hard accel as well, it almost reminds me of a very faint ex manifold gasket leaking. Not sure if that is caused by the separator device in the top of the assembly or what, but the fit and finish was great. I've got around 1000 miles on it now and it's just to the level where it will drain out the bottom valve, so it's doing something.

If you put some insulation foam tape wrap around the tubes it wil stop the sound. I also followed up with a wrap of Tessa tape. It sounded like a darn vacuum leak lol

Mine has been installed now for a few months and I don’t even notice it anymore.

Mine constantly annoys me. I believe it's the placement, right up against the firewall. It's not just the hissing, it's the constant variation of hissing depending on throttle.

I'm actually relocating it to the front of the engine bay this week. I've got hoses on order, and already have two brass 90 degree barbs. Looking forward to it.

OK, I give up...

Has it occurred to anyone that it's common, basic physics- when pushing [or pulling] air through a line, for there to be noise. Liquid in the air would tend to aggravate the situation; as would increased air speed or decreased line diameter.

If the noise bothers you, you can try to mitigate it; but the noise doesn't necessarily mean something's wrong.

Fully aware nothing is wrong, and that it's just how it works. Just working to mitigate the annoyance is enough, even with the knowledge it might never be totally mitigated.

I didn't mean to insult you. I just got tired of waiting for SOMEONE to sound like they were aware.

I suppose you were the trigger, and the collateral damage.

Nah, no insult taken, it's all good. I realize some folks are like SOMETHING IS WRONG1!!!1!!ZZZzz like I've read on quite a few forums as well as some videos on YouTube. As long as I know it's operating as intended, mitigating works perfectly for me. It's just a matter of balancing just how much I'm willing to mitigate. I know the noise is always going to be there, so I'm just moving it further away from me so that it's "quieter".

I am happy to report that relocating the catch can to the front area right above the battery tray has COMPLETELY eliminated hissing/whooshing noises. And no I don't mean cutting down on the noise, I mean it's completely imperceptible from the cabin.

I simply obtained more of the same hose that came with my UPR catch can, flipped the bracket upside down, mounted the catch can back onto it, then mounted the entire thing on the small brace/bracket support toward the front, just behind the front left headlight (it's a 10mm bolt brace). You mount it there instead of the 13mm bolt, since my mounting bracket only allowed it to be installed one way in the "right side up" orientation, and that is toward the back at the cowl. I'll post pics when I get home.

Given that this is the case, it's kinda mind boggling just how much engine noise gets through if you have anything jammed up right against the top of the cowl. Just glad that I had the empty space to move the catch can. The original mount has it right up against the edge of the cowl inside the engine bay. For reference, this is the UPR catch can I have, and you can see in the picture on the site exactly where it's mounted.

Now that it's been relocated to the front, complete silence from inside the cabin. Very happy with the results!
