Arm rest/ door handle broken

A while back I ran across a Video of a repair by wrapping a cord tightly around it.I cant seem to find the vid again. I want to try this but dont remember how to tie the cord off for it to hold.
I have it repair with a metal plate screwed on the back side now but want the cord over it to add strength.
