Ah. So I’m hearing the forum here needs to sponsor me to do an L8T + 10L1000 swap?
Just incase some future visitors sees this thread the 10L1000 is technically a GM built transmission. Not actually an Allison. Allison consulted on the design phase but didn't actually have any dealings with building them. 2019 is the last year for the Allison built transmission. So anyone with a 20+ 2500 or 3500 with the 10l1000 the Allison badge on the truck is just in name only.

Same with the 10L90. I think it’s also called an Allison but not actually an Allison. Just a beefy version of the 10L90. I believe the 10L1000 is truly a different transmission that is designed for diesel level torque.

Yes the 10l1000 is in the Diesel trucks only.

Would this be an option? I have not read the entire thread, so maybe mentioned before.

I had a local custom builder do the 10L80 swap on my 2012 Tahoe. The same guy swapped my 5.3 for a tuned and cammed 6.2L L97 motor about 2 years ago. The increased horsepower eventually took out my 6L90 with 135k miles on it. He used the PSS harness, I bought a 2024 10L80 with 4k miles on it out of a wrecked 1500. He used an OEM converter that matched up to the 10L80 and he had to figure out the right flywheel for spacing. He also upgraded the trans cooler and lines. The 10 speed has drastically changed the performance of the truck. First gear is super short and then right into the power band.

The stock TCM tune needed quite a bit of adjustment but I think part of that was because it’s not my stock 5.3 motor. Gas mileage has dropped 3mpg. The trans is holding in gear a little longer than we would like but when we make further tuning adjustments nothing changes with the shifts. My guy has some custom builder friends that did a 10L80 swap in a TBSS. He’s gonna reach out to them for some input on tuning it further. I expected some issues like this so if you want to do some custom work be patient and prepared for delays and issues. I don’t drive far on a daily basis so I can deal with the lower mpg especially for much better performance. All in all I am very happy with the swap. My guy also had a hard time getting in touch with PSS but he did say that once he got them on the phone they were very helpful.

I think this is true standalone controller made for customs race applications. PSS is designed for integration into the vehicle.

Great feedback! Thank you! You really took it far with an engine as well. Other than the holding gear a bit too long, how do you like the over swap?

My truck only gets 14ish MPG… not sure it can get worse lol

If you get the railroad attachments you can take it down the train tracks that might improve the mileage. Lol

What are the proprietary differences between GM's 10L80 & FoMoCo's 10R80?
More importantly, what's stopping anyone from yanking a 10R80 from a FoMoCo vehicle,
and installing it AS A 10L80 in a GM vehicle - or vice versa, for that matter?

I wonder if the bellhousing is different? The trans is used hooked up to the Ecoboost V6. Could be some small nuances but likely wouldn’t be terribly difficult to adapt them.

If the bellhousing is bolt-on, you're in business ...

I love it. Totally changed the way it performs. It gets right out of the hole with the super short first gear. The truck is tuned for horsepower/performance so mpg is awful. I was getting about 9 mpg before trans swap and now it’s like 7. I think once we get the tune dialed in it will improve

This is great to hear. I think I saw online somewhere that HPTuner is how you tune the PSS units?

My goal for the truck is definitely longevity + towing performance. Currently, this is our long-haul travel truck but will be towing a large boat in the [near] future.

Do we REALLY want to taint our GM products with a Ford unit?? BLAH!
For those who may not be aware ...
Wikipedia said:
Ford–GM 10-speed automatic transmission
Redirected from Ford-GM 10-speed automatic transmission
The Ford–GM 10-speed automatic transmission is part of a joint venture between Ford Motor Company and General Motors to design and engineer two transmissions:
a longitudinal 10-speed transmission and a transverse 9-speed trans-axle.
Each company manufactures its own unique version of the transmissions in its own factories.
The 10-speed transmission was designed by Ford, while the 9-speed transmission was designed by GM.

Production
The 10R80 was first produced at the Ford Livonia Transmission Plant in Livonia, Michigan,
and the Hydra-Matic 10L80 is made at the General Motors Romulus Powertrain Plant, in Romulus, Michigan.
GM's Silao, Mexico, transmission plant started 10L80 production in 2018,
while Ford's Sharonville Transmission plant started 10R80 production in 2018.

Just looked up pictures and I think there are a lot of different bellhousings as Ford put this into both V6 and V8 vehicles. V6 bellhousing are definitely different but V8 look pretty similar…
To clear it up the main difference is in the electronics. The bell housing is interchangeable. From a stand alone situation I guess it wouldn't matter if you want to put a ford transmission behind a gm engine. But the 10R80 has different issues then the 10l80 and you would have to get the gm bell housing to use it. I'm not judging i want to put a Nissan Frontier manual 6 speed transmission behind my lsx376.

main difference is in the electronics and ford has a lower 1st gear.
You mean the main difference between FoMoCo's 10R80 & GM's 10L80?
Both share ALL the same ratios
1st: 4.696 . . 2nd: 2.985 . . 3rd: 2.146 . . 4th: 1.769 . . 5th: 1.520 6th: 1.275
7th: 1.000 . . 8th: 0.854 . . 9th: 0.689 . . 10th: 0.636 . . . Rev: -4.866

can't speak to the electronics, or the bellhousings ...
