The newer ones had VVT in addition to the AFM. You can disable the VVT with a phaser lockout or swap the cam. If you're gonna swap the cam, you may as well delete the AFM as well. Barring any other engine damage, this will make that 5.3 as reliable as a Gen3, but stronger.

Since the '06 (L59 or LM7?)...

There's a chance the engine could be an L33 and those had 799/243 heads and the same camshaft specs without AFM.

Can I use any vin 0 lmg engine?

You want a 2007-2009 LMG or an all aluminum LC9 of the same years. These engines do not have VVT which the later ones do.

You could also use the 2007-2009 LY5 and swap over your intake and fuel injectors to essentially turn it into an LMG. The LY5 was not a FlexFuel engine, it has smaller injectors.

Keep an eye out for an L76, LY6 or L9H, the big horsepower 6.0 and 6.2 motors! They'll physically drop right in but you'll need to add VVT wiring harness and their computer. The L76 is an AFM motor though and the only one of the three that is FlexFuel is the L9H.

There are other options but let me know if this is information overload.
