Hello all

In hope that I can get this all squared away I come to you guys for help. I am at lost with this and do not know what else to try.

I have a Pioneer 8200NEX installed in my 2007 escalade for about 2 years now. Everything worked great. No flows, no issues. Retained all my oem features including back up camera. So just recently when going into reverse, the screen on my pioneer head unit would just present a black screen with the parking guide lines. So I checked the fuse and even replaced it even though it wasn't bad. Nothing changed. So I went ahead and replaced the oem back up camera with a Dorman unit. After that was done, still didn't work. So at this point I am thinking its the head unit. I remove the head unit and inspect all wiring and connection. Everything is solid. Recheck several times the settings on the head unit and they are all good.

Now that I have access to the head unit and connections I go ahead and purchase a cheap $15 camera. I am trying to conclude if the issue is the radio or not. So I hook up the rear camera to the head unit and the camera works. This tells me that the radio is good. So now I start looking into the back up camera module under the passenger front seat. So I inspect all wiring and connections. Everything seems good. Remove the module to visually inspect and looks ok. So not knowing what to test for or where to look, I go on Facebook market and source a 2007 escalade for parts. I drive 15 mins and pick up the module. Plug in the replacement module to realize that the issue is still present. So now I am at lost.

I go ahead and purchase another pac rp5-gm31. Bought it off amazon. I figured I can return with out a problem if this doesnt solve my issue. Install it and nothing happen. This didnt solve the issue. Returned the pac unit, refund back. I now bring out the factory head unit. Plug her in and boom! back up camera works. So not I am really confused. Just for fun I remove my pioneer 5201nex from my other car and plug it into the escalade and back up camera just display the black screen. Plug in the OEM radio again and back up camera works.

So...….
-Pioneer 8200nex worked great for about 2 years. Then reverse camera stopped working(black screen).
-Replace oem back up cam with Dorman unit.
-Aftermarket camera works with Pioneer 8200nex
-New pac module and that didn't solve the issue
-Replaced back up camera module
-Pioneer 5102nex is same thing as pioneer 8200nex(black screen in reverse)
-OEM radio works and presents back up camera image.

Any suggestion please. What am I missing?

That’s definitely a weird one hopefully someone will chime in! My backup camera has started getting funky like all blurry and pixelated green lines ran through it I’m assuming it’s the camera bad sometimes it works sometimes it’s black sometimes it is halfway clear it’s weird

Do you have an aftermarket head unit and is it pioneer?

during this process anywhere did you mess with the camera polarity settings in the pioneer? that can cause a black screen if the polarity is wrong. It's rare for the pioneer to glitch but it could happen I suppose. Or maybe there is a loose connection somewhere which may rear it's head again later or by moving the wires around you happened to just fix it..
maybe on your 5210 the polarity is set different. it's under camera in the settings

I wish the settings was the issue. Ive tried everything. The fact that the $15 cam I bought worked and not the oem back up cam has me baffled. Settings were the same on both pioneer head units.

my bet is it was connection issue somewhere, if it is working now leave it be

connection issue but where? Why would it work with a cheap after market camera and why does the camera work with the oem head unit?

could be as simple as some crud on the rca connector or not being snug enough.
without being there and checking things myself, hard to say really.
not enough voltage, poor ground, intermittent loose wire, could be a variety of things

the only other thing I can think of is the pioneer software sd card can eventually start to crap out and cause a variety of problems, replacement cards are sold on ebay, it's not hard to do if it ever just goes completely fubar on you.
I made this video on it. the various 7" models should be basically the same procedure

I honestly really do appreciate your help and suggestions. The fact that both my pioneer units are not displaying an imagine in reverse in my escalade yet they both work with after market cameras just tells me that the radios are ok. I will focus on wiring even though Ive checked and checked and checked some more and nothing helped.

Is there a way to by pass pac module and run a wire directly to reverse light under dash? If so, which wire and harness? I believe some where in the bcm?

it could be the reverse signal power is not working or is not providing enough voltage to make the radio show video.
there should be a reverse signal wire at the bcm or at the lower left kickpanel.
check the gm upfitter guide they have halfway decent wiring diagrams and should show the reverse signal wire location
you could also use a meter and see what the voltage shows from the pac module when you put it in reverse, not sure what the minimum requirement is for the radio
but.. I thought you posted above>>"Plug in the OEM radio again and back up camera works."

You are correct, with the oem radio which is what I'm running now, the back up camera works flawlessly. Its a very odd situation.

Why not wire a keyed hot for the camera signal? He could toggle the camera on/off whenever he wants. I'm having the same issue with my Pioneer. I never bothered troubleshooting it. Getting lazy in my old age. All I get is a black screen when I go into reverse.

If there is a Best Buy close to you that does car audio installation maybe check with them. The Geek Squad or installation guys at my local Best Buy are pretty good, seem very well trained and experienced plus they do a lot of Pioneer. Not sure if all Best Buy installers are this good but they might be able to troubleshoot that for you.

I guess each person can set it up however they like I prefer for it to just work as designed. I don't want to be pressing buttons or flipping a switch for a move that is already being performed when I shift to reverse.
a person could get a direct reverse signal wire from the bcm instead of thru a module.

what I would do in either of you guys case is test the reverse voltage and if that is good then check to see if there is a actual video signal or not, but I have things that accept video input to do that. if you get a black screen on anything else that accepts a composite signal then the camera ccd is probably bad. ccd is a sensor that provides the video it's in every camera out there, it's works like a human eye. or there is a break in the wire somewhere, which you could possibly determine with a ohm test.
and you could do a test on the headunit by feeding it composite video from any source like a videocamera (with 12v applied to the reverse trigger wire)

having messed with a lot of electronics for a living if the video signal is corrupted, not the correct (hertz), grounded out, too weak or something then you will just get a black screen (no signal) or it could be fuzzy, washed out, dim or anything
