So for some background information I recently bought an 08 Chevy Tahoe with 201k miles for $1900 bucks. The seller let me hook up my tool and was up front about the check engine light and the P0121 code. After purchasing it, one of the first things we did was clean the throttle body. After finishing that, the heater core hose snapped at the firewall and sprayed antifreeze everywhere. A day later we replaced the hose and started the truck up. The p0121 code was gone but the truck still had issues idling and had another code. The idling issues were a bit to be expected after seeing the state of the throttle body but we next went to work on the p0449 code and replacing the snapped evap solenoid above the spare tire that sits under the truck on the backside. After replacing that, we finally were code free and rid of the check engine light, but still had major idling and surging RPM issues. At times after starting up the truck they would soar and maintain over 2k. We tried to manual reset, I even bought the idle relearn 977-002 tool. The tool wouldn’t work due to starting the truck with it plugged in the rpm would stay over 2k. We replaced the throttle body all together which also didn’t solve the problem.
Finally I took it to a shop and for $25 bucks he plugged in his fancy expensive tool and was able to do and idle reset/relearn. This made a tremendous difference of no longer having 900-1200 rpm in park or staying at or above 2k while driving. However, there has been one fundamental issue that has not improved since I first drove it after the first TB cleaning.. the first acceleration from over 10 mph the rpm will surge and feel like driving in quick sand but after waiting a few seconds with it over 2500, it’ll almost “relax” drop all the way sub 1k and drive perfectly. That is until it’s time to slow down for a turn or having to stop and drop below say 15mph. At which point the next acceleration will do the same thing. Surge/struggle, drop down to where it should be and relax, drive amazing. Rinse, repeat, everytime. The shop said the transmission is slipping and the fluid was a bit low and smelled burnt. We added some and I’m going to get a fluid and filter change here soon but was curious if anyone has had similar issues or suggestions on the problem. For context, when I test drove it he mentioned a similar problem although it wasn’t occurring on first acceleration it was more like from 2nd to 3rd or the 35-50mph range. Also a side note that’s interesting and unique - 2 separate times since owning this truck has it started itself completely with no keys or anyone’s the truck. This last time the doors were still locked and both times putting the keys in the ignition to try and turn it off did not work, only pressing on the brakes a few times did. I did see something about this brings known issue if a aftermarket alarm or remote start is installed, which the previous owner did install an aftermarket alarm. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Could you clarify how a broken heater core hose would spew transmission fluid?
My apologies I misspoke. I meant to say antifreeze not transmission fluid. However, that was really a (hopefully) irrelevant part of the background and context to my current issue. I see how it could spark confusion though thanks for pointing that out for me.

The engine surging, but vehicle not accelerating, does sound like a transmission issue..
Might check fuel pressure, to make sure it's not fluctuating too much as you drive around?

Since the truck won't shutoff with key in ignition, it sounds like an aftermarket remote start might be the issue.

I took a couple pictures of the live data tonight while driving it. To be honest I’m not very knowledgeable with these kind of things so I may not have been focusing on the correct aspects that will help me find out the underlying cause. Also to be more specific the vehicle will accelerate some, just nowhere near the output the RPM Spikes that are occurring. Mostly just compared the rpm’s to the mad and the mad to the a tps. If there’s specific anyone would like to see in order to give a better suggestion just say the word

See if you can log transmission slip RPM.
Slip while shifting is normal, but between shifting should be basically 0.
Here's what mine looks like..

Copy that I’ll do that later today. It’s just such a specific thing that happens EVERY time upon first real acceleration (I wish I could be more specific, it’s just each time I’m giving it gas from sub 1k rpm or sub 20mph to accelerate as you would when a light turns green) it feels like I imagine trying to move in quick sand would be, it struggles until either I surpass 2500 and let off the gas a bit the rpm will instantly drop all the way to 800 or so then when I press on the gas it drives GREAT with no issues whatsoever. Until I have to slow down or stop then the process will restart. I’m going to get a video and post it later this morning for context. You can actually feel it almost… relax then drop down as it should. I’m not sure if this correlation has anything to do with whatever the underlying issue is but during this time of struggle and rpm surge the oil gauge will get up to around 60 then drop down to 40ish. When it’s driving well it’ll hover between 35-45 but mostly right around 40. Hopefully the video will help explain better than I’m able to.

FWIW Dorman's web site shows that the idle relearn 977-002 tool goes back to some 2014 models only; it doesn't seem to be compatible with a 2008.

My statement was based on the vehicle list that's in that device's page ("Detailed Applications") on Dorman's site. Conflicting info, but not surprising considering, well, Dorman. Maybe the web developer couldn't figure out how to exceed 20 pages of the list.

Yeah no doubt I very much appreciate any sort of feedback because it means you took the time in attempt to help me and other members that could have the same issue.

I did get more information and while I’m not sure if it correlates with my problem, it’s definitely worth mentioning to clear up. So the stability needs servicing has always been showing ip on the dash and I never knew what it meant. After looking up some information on it, it was talking about a loss of communication from the trucks, computer to various parts, such as a transmission. I think you mentioned something like there’s no communication to tell the transmission. When is a good time to shift gears or something which could play factor in the rpm flare. This might have no relevance to the issue, but as someone who is very inexperienced and uneducated on things of this matter, I felt like it was worth mentioning at least.

Have you tried starting off in manual range , in first gear (to make sure it hasn't been starting in second) and accelerating briskly and manually upshifting through all the gears to make certain all are working as they should?

Anyone familiar with the 2–4 serve kit(more commonly referred to as the Corvette servo kit) the purpose of it seems like it could fix my problem and for 30 bucks. We’re gonna find out soon because it gets delivered today lol

The 093 or Corvette servo is a larger ratio second gear servo piston that I use in pretty much all my 700r4 and 4L60/65/70E builds.

That said, what problem are you trying to solve, in brief?

To sum it up the best way I can (please understand my knowledge and experience would be considered novice at best) I bought a 2008 Chevy Tahoe 4.8 roughly 3 months ago for $1975 with the knowledge and understanding that it did have some cosmetic issues as well as a few electrical ones as well. ( interior lights not attached, not stock door handles on both back seat doors, etc.) however the main concern was the p0121 and p0443 dtc codes. The seller made me aware of when accelerating the first time following either coming to a stop/starting the vehicle/slowing down like under 20 mph to turn, there would be a noticeable hesitation/rpm flare before it would catch and rpm would drop all the way back down to normal and then the truck would drive perfectly without any issues until the next time you would have to stop or significantly slow down. Then the process would repeat itself. Accelerate. Hesitate. Rpm surge up to 2300-3k. Catch itself. Rpm plummet down to where they should be, etc. we initially cleaned the throttle body but ended up just replacing it shortly after, as well as the evap solenoid located by the spare tire under the truck in the back. This cleared the dtc and we tried doing the idle relearn process. Tried it manually with removing the battery cable. Tried just driving for a few days hoping it would relearn itself. Bought the SD35 innova tool that said it had the idle relearn function. (It didn’t or at least would let me access it.) purchased the 977-002 relearn tool which wouldn’t work because when starting it for the final stage the RPM wouldn’t budge under 2k. Remove the tool, start up, normal most times. All became very frustrating and took it too a local family owned shop and they plugged in their snap on tool and were able to complete the idle relearn on the Tahoe. Did a transmission filter and fluid change/dropped the pan. Found nothing concerning in the pan. Throughout the entire process of everything mentioned above and still to this day, the same exact repeatable issue with the initial acceleration followed by hesitation as rpm climb over 2k then catches, drops down to normal. Drives perfectly. Until the next cycle begins after stopping at a light or slowing way down to turn or driving somewhere after starting it up after it had been parked somewhere. The important facts of it all, at least in my uneducated opinion, are that it’s a very predictable and repeatable thing that happens EVERY time and ONLY happens during the drive cycle mentioned above. (1st acceleration after leaving the house/driving off after stopping for a stop light/driving after slowing way down to turn). The issue has not gotten worse whatsoever nor has it occurred at all outside of those situations. It drives GREAT afterwards and until slowly all the way down, etc. so yeah, that’s basically how I got too looking into the servo kit and ended up purchasing one that gets delivered today. Will it solve all my problems? At this point I’m doubtful based on the totality of everything that’s gone on since purchasing the vehicle. However I’ve driven 2-3k miles so far without any issues and purchased it for a pretty good price in my opinion and truly love the truck so I’m hoping I can get it figured out. Also just for more context it had 201,370 miles on it when purchased.

Hesitation sounds like a potential fuel delivery problem at lower rpms.

Is the transmission slipping at lower rpms/speeds as you accelerate in first gear then shift to second gear?
