So my rear view mirror temp/compass display seems to go out after a short period of driving. It only happens when there's sun outside. I'm thinking the mirror might be overheating and shutting off as I've noticed a few times the whole mirror starts to flash on and off. I've checked the connection to make sure its secure, which looks good. Has anybody heard of a fix or do I just look at replacing the mirror?

Hey man, I just did the fix for mine not too long ago and I followed this thread from another site (sorry, wish there was one from this site):

http://z71tahoe-suburban.com/iboard/index.php?showtopic=9434&st=0&gopid=520415&#entry520415

I've driven my denali quite a few times since the fix and haven't had a single problem at all where as before it would mess up at least once every trip I took in the truck! If you do it, take some pics and make a How To thread on here if you could, I had forgotten to take pics when I did mine!

Thanks for the info! It looks like there's a picture on the thread that I can't access. Are you able to see the the pic of the circuit board?

Here's the pic, the original guy had the cracked solder joint in the upper 4R3 on the right (you can barely see it in the pic) while mine was the lower 4R3 on the left. I reflowed both sides of all 3 4R3's and like I said it has worked flawless since!

Thanks. I'll probably pull mine apart next weekend when I have time. Then I'll take pics so they can be posted up here

I'm telling you, I'm pretty sure this fix did indeed work!! I've driven the truck quite a few times and it still works flawless!! Can't believe how easy it was to fix as well, good luck and post up any questions or results you have when you get around to doing this!

Alright I got everything apart and ready to solder, jus wanna check what type of solder did you use? The basic auto store or something from the electronics store?

You don't need to necessarily add any solder, all you need to do is touch the solder gun on the solder joint to heat it up and melt it up a little, that will fix the break in the solder!! But I did add a bit of solder to all 6 of my joints, you don't need to add much if you do that!!

As long as when you touched the solder that you saw it basically puddle up like liquid to all the joints, you should have done it right! Let me know what your results are!! By the way, did you see any of them with a slight crack in the solder?

So it didn't work...completely. I'm going to pull it back apart and redo all the solder joints as I just picked one that I thought was cracked. Couldn't see any obvious cracks, but I thought I saw one. However now it doesn't shut off, but keeps flashing. The change tells me I'm on the right track tho

I agree, since you did reflow some solder and it acts different, then you are on the right track! When you did it, did you get all 6 joints or just the one that you thought was cracked?

I circled the joints that you need to reflow for sure, do all 6! Just get the solder to puddle up, make sure it puddles up evenly without having to keep heat to it too much! The original guy that posted the pic had the red arrowed joint broken on his while mine was the yellow one, mine wasn't as obvious as his was but we both did all 6 joints and haven't had a problem since!

If you have any questions, snap a pic of your mirror motherboard like the one that I sent you and I'll check it out for you, maybe also an after pic of your soldering so I can compare would be great!

I wonder if I have the same issue. My compass always says SW and the temp display only works when it's above 55*. The rest of the time, all the digits are lit.

Very well could be Jae, it really is easy to do the reflow trick with the mirror!! Crack yours open and check it out, reflow all 6 spots that I circled and see if it solves your problem!

Here's a pic of my circuit board. Another thing I noticed is I don't have the problem at night. The 4R3 is where I thought I had a problem.

Which 4R3 were you referring to since there are 3 of them? lol

I'd be reflowing all 6 of the joints and possibly adding a tad bit of new solder to each one as you reflow them! If your problem got worse from only doing one of the 6, then you are indeed on the right track and you know that the one you did needs to be redone!

Too bad you don't live in Oregon, I'd resolder it for you if you did! :sad72:
