Hello all. I have a 2006 Tahoe 2WD with 180k on the clock. The steering box is leaking badly. I used to do my own repairs, but no longer have the ability to do so. A trusted mechanic had told me that the OEM box is discontinued. He does not want to rebuild mine and cannot recommend a quality aftermarket unit. Can anyone offer a suggestion for a good aftermarket company? This is not a daily driver or off roader, just something at a good price that is readily available. Thank you!!

i have not personally used them, but two good buddies have used this company on their autoX cars. One in a 65 chevelle the other in an 84 c10. both seemed real happy with what they got.

Link below is for an 06 escalade, looks like there is 2 styles, you need to verify what you have.

I have your answer….. “ Plews & Edelmann”. I got their ‘Edelmann Elite’ steering box Just 2 months ago.
It is BRAND NEW, all components NEW, they resolved all the OEM defects ( will never leak, etc )….
Their warranty is : 100 years / 1 million miles...
Hand built in the USA. It is also ‘dyno’ checked w/ the dyno sheet.
It is a PERFECT steering box. Amazing steering control.
It cost about $950.00 with their pitman arm.
WORTH. EVERY. PENNY….. It performs NOTHING like a mass-produced box.
THEY DO NOT REQUIRE A ‘CORE CHARGE’….. Because they do NOT refurbish them….. EVERYTHING IS NEW INCLUDING THE HOUSING.
Any steering box that sells for under $500.00 is a refurbished box ( with the old GM defects still )

>> You will be relearning to hold the steering wheel straight & still at 75 mph… No “micro- corrections” anymore..
And your ‘left-right’ maneuvers will be precise.. A world of difference from a factory box.
( Oh yea….. It’s in my 2005 Yukon XL )
They make them for older trucks too.

Their box is on rockauto for 535 with no core.

Lot going on here, a 2006 steering box that's ruined at under 200k is not common & literally nothing on a 2006 Tahoe is unavailable

If your leaking PS Fluid the hoses, input shaft seal or power steering pump is most likely the culprit; hoses especially if you have the hydro boost brake system

@mountie Apparently same as yours. Your mechanic probably up-prices them for you, as do most indy shops.

Rock Auto……. The “ $535.00 “ price does not mention anything else until you go to “cart".. Like shipping a 45 lb package, plus sales tax, and, you have no recourse for a defect, and no warranty from Plews & Edlemann. If Edelmann box is purchased from a certified distributer, you will have the warranty. Rock Auto is not a certified distributer for the “ complicated parts”.
UPDATE….. MY HIGHER PRICE….. “ OVERNIGHT SHIPPING”.

I have a Steering box I bought used back in 2010 because I thought my 2002 Tahoe box was bad, when I went to remove my factory 02 box I found a clip had moved down and was hitting on the rag joint causing steering issues so i fixed that and all was good. The extra box still sits on my shelf. It is in Sacramento CA. Not sure where you are but I would certainly part with it.

Call Plews & Edelmann directly, to confirm their box purchased through Walmart holds their factory warranty.
Be sure to add their Pitman arm & pressure lines.

I purchased the 3009 box yesterday from Walmart ($459 total) and received notice today it is coming directly from Plews Edlemann in Dixon IL. It's scheduled to arrive on Wednesday.

After reading praise for the brand from @mountie , me thinks I will be very pleased.

Be prepared….. the attachment of the pitman arm may not be ‘clocked’ with steering wheel shaft ( unless you are lucky )...
It’s not a fine spline….. But you should do an alignment anyway….. that will put the steering wheel straight.
Trust me… you will think your big SUV is born again with that steering box !!

I've replaced all the steering and suspension components including upper and lower steering shafts about 3k miles ago. Popping the pitman arm off this time should be a breeze. I'm looking forward to the new box giving the ol' beast a 'like new' driving feel again at 172k.
