Are u rubbing oil across the oring before install? And hand bumping it ? Not trying to insinuate anything just wanted to know. Being u said u have done it hundreds of times. Here is a thought, is ur truck up off the ground? A buddy could have rolled under there as a joke. Crappy joke but one none the less. I've been known to put zip ties on drive shafts. Lol

I always use a thin coat of oil on the seal and I always have an issue removing the oil filter. I was able to finally get it off. Once the hosuing of the filter was destroyed I used a short and sturdy screwdriver and stuck it in the filter holes and that gave me enough leverage to remove it.

next time instead of using the filter strap wrench or pliers ill use the cup and sand paper that usually works everytime for me but this last time I barely put any grip on the oil filter wrench and the filter started to crush

If I read ur reply right. U said next time instead of using the filter strap and or pliers,.... ur not using those to install the filter right?

I've followed so many techs that over tighten filters it's nuts and even the random not tight enough and work loose. hand tight is not a spec.

no matter what type of spin on filter, there should be tightening instructions on the side, based on the thread pitch. it will be something like o ring contact, plus 3/4- 1 1/2 turn. do what it says and you should never have a filter issues agian even if you have to use a wrench to get there.

Sure hand tight is a spec..

finger snug = 20lb/inch
finger tight = 5lb/ft
hand snug = 10lb/ft
hand tight = 15lb/ft <------------hand tight
'bump past hand tight' = 20lb/ft
kinda tight = 25lb/ft
pretty tight = 30lb/ft
tight = 35lb/ft - 45lb/ft
good'n tight = 50lb/ft - 60lb/ft
1 ugga dugga = 65lb/ft - 85lb/ft
2 ugga duggas = 95lb/ft - 125lb/ft

Yep, mangled my oil filter a little and still don't have it off.. Need a wrench..
I could tell some other things were overtightened by the PO, like the engine cover, and radiator fan shroud..
Cracked the plastic on the shroud, and the engine cover screw *should* have stripped as tight as it was...
Dude, it's just PLASTIC!!! Take it easy!

I usually finger snug the oil filter, and give it another 1/2 to 3/4 turn max..
I start at finger snug, not barely o-ring contact. This tests the compressability of the o-ring material.
(Less compressable = add 1/2 turn, more compressable = add 3/4 turn)
That precisely sets it at 'a bump past hand tight', which is typically a bump past the recommended torque, which most of us do..

If you're wondering why I spent the time to type this.. I'm avoiding working on the suburban...

never had one that bad before. I would never stick a screw driver through the case as that will certainly rip it. Maybe apply alittle anti seize on the filter threads when putting it on?

I did not stick a screwdriver thru the case of the filter. The filters case started to twist just like a coke can..once that happens you have no choice but to remove the case unless you want to damage your oil pan

UPF63R.... Heavier duty case, better quality internals with no plastic. You won't crush this one getting it off.

The number one thing that helps when removing a tight filter.... Make sure the engine's fully warmed up and the oil is hot.

Had similar thing happen with a '77 Monte Carlo my dad purchased new in December of '76. Went to change the oil & filter after the first 500 miles and the factory AC oil filter wouldn't budge! My cheapo band wrench broke before just beginning to deform the filter shell. Proceeded to pound a large screw driver (a BIG one we called "Bertha") through the filter case near the base and was able to break it loose. Guessing was a combination of no lube on the gasket and perhaps an anonymous worker nicknamed "King Kong", or "Tiny" working at a GM engine plant, over-tightening the filters on an endless line of new 350 V8's! ;)

We had a forklift at work we used to call Big Bertha.

you can also try an oil filter relocation kit. You can mount it in an easy to get to location and you can also use as big an oil filter as you would like for more filtration media and greater total engine oil capacity.
