You like this truck, take the insurance new engine swap and move on. You are way ahead. Why pay more for a younger take out engine when you still have 230k on your existing tranny and differentials. The entire truck wears out with high miles. Their deal is more than fair. Take it and move on or take the check and go shop for a new rig.

Just serviced the transmission about two months ago less than 8k miles since i drained most of the fluid and replaced the filter, new fluid and gasket. The front and rear differential are not original to the chassis and i will be having the rear diff rebuilt with a detroit trutrac once i get it back after this swap. I swapped the front diff with a low milage front diff to match the 3:73s in the rear.
The truck came stock with 3:42 front and rear Gu6 rpo. It has been a reliable project the three years ive owned it. I have out over 50k miles on the chassis since owning the vehicle. I Love this truck! My view of the truck to me is no different then an older guy still tinkering with his square body.

Edit: Minus the solid front axle. Which maybe a possibility later down the line.

WTH?! They gave you $9700 then, and now $4100 for this?!

That's crazy considering you bought it for $5k!

What insurance is this? I need to switch to them and find myself big 'ol puddle of water... Lol

Edit: kidding aside, i think you should properly get your engine diagnosed, although at this point, doesn't sound like it matters.

I hope you find a route to get your truck running.

Please keep us updated.
That dude gonna get dropped like a bad habit from his insurance company. His rates are gonna go nuclear.

Also the 4l60 only costs $1500 to replace. Its pretty inexpensive in my opinion. Speaking from experience with 02 Tahoe LT i had around 4 years back. With no rust on the chassis being that I'm in so-cal it wouldn't be hard for this truck to see another 20 years. Lord Willing!

Insurance finally got back to me regarding what they will be willing to do with my Tahoe. They confirmed that will pay for a used engine replacement and labor totaling around $4100. They are offering a 1 year warranty on parts and labor on the used engine with 130k miles. Im considering the offer and waiting to see if the mechanic can source a lower mileage engine.
The odds of finding a legit 130K gen 3 engine used is likely ZERO. For an engine to have that "low of miles" it would be a thrown in reman BUT anything replacing original engine is just stories without paperwork to back it up. You think them salvage yards know the person that owned any given vehicle last? Let alone take any time to document FACTS about the used parts. Heck you cant even trust the odometers since most of the originals have failed and some people dont even bother with get the replacement programmed with the true mileage.

Key words are 1 year warranty my friend. Also I can show you plenty of clean gmt800s with under 135k. Im in California, there are plenty of garage kept tahoes, yukons and silverados all around. Plenty of “pavement queens” with no rust. With that being said it is highly like to find a engine like the one my insurance has claimed to have found from a wrecked example of the aforementioned vehicles.

Did water get in the cab? Under the carpet?
No it did not, the water wasnt nearly that high. It wasnt that flooded, just enough for the tires to kick a shit ton up into the fender well. The vehicle was in 4hi, i was excited to have my 4wd back after a year of having mitch match gears front and rear. I just installed a matching 3:73 geared front diff in the vehicle a few weeks ago and being that im in the city i havent had much opportunity to test it out. So i made a horrible decision to go 35 plus into somewhat flooded area of the road.

The odds are quite different here in California‍.

I found the source of the engine that will be swapped into my tahoe. It’s looking pretty promising.

And you actually believe what them salvage yards are telling you? 138k miles on a 20+yr old engine....thats less than 7k a year on it. Someone liked to walk or take the bus.

Either i’m too optimistic or you are too pessimistic. There were many thousands of these built in the US alone, to think there aren't more than a few with less than 10k a year put on them is a bit naive.

Yeah, there's plenty of older vehicles out there with (relatively) lower mileage.

We sold an 05 Ford Escape to my Mom maybe 12 years ago, which had like 84k then. She retired about 8 years ago and hardly drives it anymore. I think it may have passed the 92k mile mark this past year...

A few years ago I did an oil change and was going to replace the air filter. The air filter I had put the date and milage on with a sharpie. In 2 years, she had like 2 thousand miles or something crazy like that. I reinstalled the "old" filter and returned the new filter to the store. Lol

@Kungfubenny Sounds like this occurred from the recent SoCa historic floods? That sucks. We get flash floods here pretty regularly. The officials are always telling the public not to drive into standing water, yet it happens almost every time, often resulting in vehicles getting washed or away or worse:deaths. It's sad. I think often, people just don't know or can't see how deep the water is, especially at night or if driving through unfamiliar roads.

The tape on the driver's seat tells a story. Lots of in and out. The mileage could still be in the 138k miles area BUT, none of that tells you whether the oil was changed regularly and cooling system taken care of or even what type of oil and filter was used. A CarFax could help a bit. It's $50 to get one and IMO, I would do it. It could be 75k miles instead and only had 3 oil changes. It is a crap shoot.

Besides the tape the interior is pretty good condition; i take that as a good sign. Time will tell though. My insurance will cover a 1yr warranty on parts and labor. Im going to the shop tomorrow to discuss some new parts to put on it before installation.

The rest of the interior looking good just means no one can stand to be around the previous owner.
