Good advice given, it is a pain to rotate the engine to do this correctly but it will get you installed properly and eliminate having to do it twice. Some jobs, the hard way is the only way.

I did wonder if it’s factory procedure to torque each bolt down in order or get them all in finger tight and then torque. I could see a scenario where the flywheel flexes just enough to put pressure on the final bolt making it difficult to thread in.

I’ll report back after another try. I had to step away to let the body recoup and for mental sanity.

Yes, finger tight.... And torque and sequence in three steps up to proper torque. It kind of sucks having to rotate the engine over that many times, but this is not a place you want to take shortcuts on. Loctite on the bolts also.

Good news to share: despite cleaning up the fastener threads with a Lange kit twice, I picked up a new bolt kit and all three bolts went in like butter. It was a fastener with bad threads. It's a relief that the problem was a simple one to solve but equally frustrating that something like bad threads on one bolt can set you back hours.

I have two remaining items to tackle. The exhaust sounds like a dump truck so some adjustment is needed to get it tightened up and properly sealed.

As fate would have it, the starter just started hitting the flywheel when the truck is running so it's on the way out. A new unit arrives tomorrow.

Hopefully by noon tomorrow, it will be back on the road.

I appreciate the continuous advice and more importantly, the motivation. This job as been an epic challenge of will and determination.

Last year at 61, I dragged the transfer case out from under the Escalade.... Grabbed it with both hands and threw it up on the workbench without thinking.... To my surprise, I woke up the next morning feeling just fine. Close one, sometimes I forget I'm not 26!

Oh yeah, when installing your transfer case if you have the all-wheel drive.... I put it on the floor jack with the tail shaft pointed up. Raise it up and let the tail shaft lean back over the crossmember. Grab it with both hands, use my elbow to push the Jack out of the way, lift the end that makes to the transmission to the proper angle and fit it by hand. That's really probably only about 30% of the weight, with a bunch resting on the crossmember under the tail housing.

Exactly what I did. It can be a little tricky keeping it balanced on the jack but it works.

Next time you do an oil change and the bottom of the engine is dry it will all be worth it....

I am 67 now, my day of bench pressing tranny's is over I am afraid, broke down and purchased a tranny jack about 5 years ago. They actually work but are much slower than the bench press method. Youth is an awesome thing to have while you have it.

The truck is back on the road. I had to use a wire wheel to get hardened exhaust assembly paste off the pipe at the mid section to correct the exhaust leak. The transmission shop used paste in Jan which I'm sure is great for them but creates a headache for the next guy.

New Delco Gold starter is in but making a screaching sound during crank (quiet once the engine starts.) I assume this means some shimming/adjustment is necessary to get better mating with the flywheel so I'm trying to figure that out.
