2012 Tahoe 5.3: VERMONT sometimes "Wicked COLD!"

I switched to Mobil1 filter (And oil) after searching on "Low Oil Pressure Cold Start". I had a couple of -5F starts where the oil pressure indication came up so slowly that the "Low Oil Pressure Stop Engine" warning came on. Saw some discussion that Mobil1 was better. So I switched..

Oil pressure does come up definitely faster on cold start; no more warnings. Warm oil pressure is normal: 20 PSI Idle, 30 PSI running (200,00+ miles)

Oil looks good at 3-4000 mile changes.

WORKS For Me...

Thanks for all the great shared knowledge here!

Regards, Terry King

After 50 years of changing oil, 15 of which as full time mechanic and the rest part time and on the side, I dont pay much attention to brand of oil or filter as long as you change it at normal intervals.

I notice a difference when it below zero here with different synthetic oils i have tested.I also have noticed differences with oil filter and different pressure reading hot or cold here so their is some variance.Starting my hoe 0 to -20f and its easy to tell about oil thickness and or filter flow on cold start.Basing everything off 5w-30

Fram XG3675 or Amsoil EAO64

Both *very* high quality synthetic filters w/ the long can. Wouldn't touch the rest of Fram's lineup with a 10ft pole, but their ultra synthetics are on point. And well.. Amsoil is Amsoil.

IMO, better filter > better oil. Even the best oil will do you no good if it has floating particulates and contaminants in it
Well, with my experiences with my f150 and the Silverado i got off of the father in law. Run a quality filter and any oil that isnt basically Dollar General brand and you will be fine.

1995 F150 5.0- 307071 miles

Always a motorcraft fl-1a filter while ive had it since 140k miles.
Oil whatever was cheapest by weight and brand
SuperTech
Traveller (Tractor Supply brand)
Oreilly house brand
Pennzoil (specifically sae hd40 weight)
Mystery hd 30wt from the barrel at work.

2006 5.3 Silverado 406000 miles (got it at 395k)
Father in law says dealership changes from new till 120k so delco oil and filters

120k to 250k
Microguard, wix, ac delco filters

Oil valvoline 5w30

I would never run a conventional oil were i live.If it get's cold and its only 6 degrees out now so thats not really cold here.Every video i have seen shows conventional oil doesnt even move in those temps.I would never run anything but a good oil filter and synthetic oil but to each his own. What would you want in your oil pan or filter when its 0 or 20 below zero.

Barring extreme temps... conventional oil is okay for 99 percent of applications.
But, to answer the question.
Friday it was 15 below here and i left for work at 3 am. Truck cranked a little slow but not bad, and the autometer oil gauge showed pressure in id say 3 to 5 seconds 5w30 orielly dino juice.... let the clutch out and down the road i go.

Hmmm. Some believe in Luck.. I believe in Metallurgy.

And lubrication theory. My best friend from High School built serious B drag race cars. Much later he became the manager of the Military Jet Engine development group at Pratt and Whitney. "Wow!", he said, "Now I finally actually understand about bearing clearances, oil films and pressure".
