Illuminated Grille Emblem and Puddle Light Install Step by Step

The GMC Illuminated Grille Emblem and mirror puddle lights come as plug and play accessories.

The Grille Emblem comes as one piece with a wiring harness. It does not come with instructions, but it is pretty self explanatory.

The wiring harness will plug into the new grille emblem and run along the shutter frame, down to the back of the left (drivers) side headlamp. The headlamps harness will plug into the new harness and the harness will plug into the headlamp.

Remove the upper shroud. It is held on with plastic clips. Remove bolts on top of grille.


Grille has 4 tabs that need to be released after bolts are removed. One on either side and two towards the center. Pull up and out gently on grille. This will allow you to get behind the old grille emblems for removal.

The old emblems will have to be removed one by one. Each emblem has tabs that must be released from the grille. A flat head works well, you may need an extra set of hands to pull back on the grille for access.


The upper part of the bumper that fits up in front of the headlamps may come out as you pull back the grille. Each side is fastened by 2 clips, it will easily pull out and pop back in. Make sure the clips go in straight and not from the side when reassembling.


Remove the first 6 bolts in the wheel liner. Remove the bolt in the bumper and pull bumper away from bumper bracket. This will allow you access to the back of the headlamp assembly.


Run grille emblem harness through the back of the grille into the new grille emblem. Push in the new emblem into the grille. You will hear/feel it click into place. You will now run the harness up through the top opening of the shutter frame. Make sure it is through the top of the frame, and not through the top shutter opening.

The harness is shown running through the top of the shutter frame, (not the shutter opening) The harness comes with clips to clip it to the frame to hold it in place. The harness should not be visible through the front of the grille.


The harness will then run up and over the radiator support and drop down behind the left headlamp assembly. Pull away wheel liner and unplug headlamp assembly. Plug in your headlamp to the new harness and plug in the new harness to the headlamp. Zip tie the harness to the lower fender bracket.



Once your grille is installed, hit your remote or turn on your headlamps to check. Push left side of bumper back into the bumper bracket attached to the lower part of the left fender. Bolt the bumper back to the fender, and re install the wheel liner screws. Push grille pins back into place and re install the grille bolts. Re install the upper shroud.

Installing the mirror puddle lights is fairly simple. To remove the old lights, use a small flat head to gently depress the clip to remove. Unclip the wire harness. The puddle lights are coded on the directions. Blue label goes to left mirror, green label to right mirror. Unplug old light and plug in new puddle light. Reinstall by clicking into mirror.

So jealous these emblems are massive compared to the 15-20s. Only way it would work is if I got an aftermarket grill and honestly the aftermarket selection sucks.

I installed the illuminated black emblem on my '21 AT4 today. The write up here was great (thanks!) to know what I was in for. I'll add a few comments from my install experience:

• 90% of the job is getting the old emblems off without damaging the grill. They're attached much stronger than I anticipated. Plan to get frustrated and cuss.
• I was doing this solo. A second set of hands would've made things much easier, namely with the removal of the existing emblems. Unless you're willing to pop the top of the front bumper off their retainers, you can barely fit your wrist behind the grill - let alone a decent sized screwdriver... and still be able to see what you're doing. You almost need 1 person pulling the top of the grill to make room, while another person is working to unfasten the emblem clips.
• My man card may be revoked for admitting this, but after an hour of trying the emblem removal approach laid out by the OP, I gave in and switched to following the GM instructions for removing them. This involved taking a small flat blade screwdriver and popping the red GMC inserts out of the 3 chrome letters. Once the red inserts are removed, ALL of the retaining clips for the chrome emblems are directly and EASILY accessible from the front; no back side access needed. In fact, using this approach, you don't even need to loosen up the grill (the 6 screws as laid out by the OP). Simply pry out the red insets, then use a flat blade directly against the emblem retaining clips (which are a PITA to release from the backside). After switching approaches, I literally had all 3 letters removed in < 15 minutes. Versus an hour+ of cussing, bruised and cut wrist/fingers, etc. with nothing to show for it. Downside? Your OEM emblem is basically garbage - it's still functional but dinged and scraped. IMHO, not a big deal as I don't ever plan on pulling the new illuminated one off. And if need be, you can always by a new standard one.
• It took me about 2.5 hours start to finish, not including the hour wasted on backside emblem removal. That includes final screw torqueing to spec, testing and cleaning all parts and surfaces before reassembly. Could probably do it in 90 minutes if you're just ripping and replacing, and backyard mechanic'ing it.
• When buying the part from the GMC Accessories website, it offered dealer installation as an add on at checkout. Different dealers had different prices. I had one by me offering install for $65 which was almost to cheap to believe. But if you're debating on DIY vs. paying the dealer, you should certainly check out several of the dealers on the checkout screen for pricing, as I saw ranges of $65-200. $65 looks like a heck of a deal after doing mine, but I also wanted the satisfaction of knowing mine was done right (DIY).

Looks good doesn't it? Great points added. My husband and I are Auto Collision Techs, so we have spent the last 20 years trying NOT to break things. Once you've had to pay for a few parts you broke, you learn to use finesse early on. Glad you were able to get it installed.

Thanks for the write up. I have the illuminated kit, but would like to switch it to black. The front should be straightforward since the wiring is in place. Does anyone have instructions on the rear emblem? Does the kit include instructions?

$65 for install is a deal. Local Chevy dealers offering the illuminated bowtie are quoting about $190 for install. Since the bowtie is just 1 piece vs the GMC 3 pieces I would think it would be less but no.
