Sales Strategy for Wheels

Moderator, if this is the wrong forum, feel free to move it. I didn't think I could post it in classifieds, since it isn't actually a for sale post...

I have a set of NNBS Yukon Denali chrome 20" wheels I've been trying to sell locally for months. But prices have fallen off a cliff. I'm pulling the ad to wait out COVID, or at least wait for another stimulus check. But I'm also thinking about having the wheels painted, since I'll have some time. Do you think they'd sell better with a fresh coat of paint than chrome? I'm leaning toward black, as the "murdered out" look is still a thing. Gloss or matte? What would you want as a buyer?

From the pic they look in great shape. Is the chrome pitted, peeling or flaking? If not I'd leave them.

Matte black just looks cheap IMO.

I would probably leave them chrome as properly painting them gloss black will take a lot of work (thorough sanding and priming).

But I do think they will probably sell easier in gloss black.

what is your asking price? Possibly too high? Those are going for $400 or less in my area.

The problem is probably people want something for nothing--or almost nothing.

Most likely true....is why I hate selling anything anymore. Always wanting to trade rather than give you money and it’s never a trade for anything good. Usually get offered a stock muffler off a Honda Civic “still in good shape” or a bucket of off brand legos or something.

They aren't perfect. One wheel had a minor ding in the rim, like the PO ran over something. I straightened it and covered the damaged chrome with chrome foil, which made the repair invisible from a few feet away. All four wheels have tiny little spots in the chrome that won't polish out. I though they might be stains from artillery fungus, or maybe the PO got too aggressive with the chemicals. I had one person tell me they were corrosion. But I don't think that's the case, as they aren't rough or the right color for that.

When I first listed them, they were selling in my area for $1000-$1200 a set without TPMS sensors. I started at $950 (with center caps TPMS sensors and valve stems) because of the condition (fully disclosed in the ad). I got offers from $400-$650. After the first two months, I accepted a $650 offer, but the guy passed when he saw the spots in person (even though I'd sent him photos). This happened a second time with another guy. So I dropped the price to $550. Prices have dropped to about $400 now, which is where I have them priced. But no one's offering more than $200. At that price, it's just tire kickers and bottom feeders, so I don't bother responding, as they'll never actually show up. I've pulled the ad, and will sit on them until they're worth my time.

So I'm thinking if I get them painted, I can fully and properly repair the ding in the one wheel, and cover the spots in the finish. Maybe that will help when the market comes back.

When you say “get them painted” - would that be at full price at a real wheel repair / paint shop? If yes, I don’t think you will see a good return on investment there.

Honestly the style of wheel is a bit dated so only NBS and NNBS owners would bite, and those owners are getting fewer and poorer.

Those are worth $4-600 depending on condition. If you are getting offers close to that same range that should tell you something.

Guys wanting me to deliver 3 hours away (each way), for free. I actually had two different "buyers" ask for that, and both times I happened to be driving that way for another reason. But when I said "sure", they both ghosted me. WTF?

Offers to trade total junk, probably stolen junk at that.

One guy said he only had $100. I seriously though about giving him the address of the local bank as the meeting point, so when he showed up I could point to the bank and tell him to get the rest of the money.

Guys saying "cash in hand", like I'd accept anything else, lol.

Craigslist is dead in my area. That leaves FB Marketplace, which is full of these yahoos. Otherwise, I have to consider shipping, which invariably comes out of my pocket on wheels this common. Such a PITA no matter what.

Those are worth $4-600 depending on condition. If you are getting offers close to that same range that should tell you something.

I stick by my original opinion. Keep them as-is (you'll never recoup your money by painting them) and I don't take less (or much less) than $400. I'm with you, I'd ignore the $200 offers, too. Just may not be a great time for selling wheels right now for various reasons.

Yeah it sucks. I’ve sold two sets of those. I got $400 for a damaged set and $500 for a decent set. I just don’t think those are a very desirable wheel.

I'd keep the chrome and sell them for a price that you are comfortable with, and reflects the general market value of what folks are willing to pay. Regarding refinishing and/or painting them, I have to agree with @cfmistry , how much is your time spent on this worth to you?
